Holding a lock

Postby Smiley » 9 Jul 2005 11:29

Hey, I'm new here and to lockpicking too. I was wondering how I would go about holding a lock while trying to lockpick it. At the moment I'm trying to lockpick a tumbler lock so any help as to holding them is what I'm really after. Pictures would be great too.

Thanks

Why don't you buy a small vice, you would then have both hands free to manipulate the lock. If you don't have a vice, trap the lock in a drawer or even a door and use your feet to close it tight (the use of feet, is only mean't for the door).

If you've got a cylinder lock in your hand, try holding it between your thumb and forefinger, do this by turning your hand 'palm up', You can then use your fourth finger on the same hand to apply tension using a turning tool.

I always prefer to hold locks in my hand while I pick. THe actual grip I use will depend on what's comfortable for the size and shape of the lock. I tend to use my middle finger or thumb to apply tension depending on which was I want to apply that tension.

Hey, Smiley.

I am right handed and I hold the lock in my left hand, the same hand that I use my 3rd, 4th, or both fingers to apply the tension to the tension wrench.

It works well for me because it gives me a lot of tension control, but may or may not for other people. Do what works for you and as long as you can ease off on the tension when you need to, that's mainly all that matters at this point.

OR:

Hold the lock with your left hand using your index finger to cover the brand on the front. Put your thumb on the underside. Using your middle finger, press on the tension lever and the keyway should be trying to turn clockwise (as you look into the keyway).
To turn anti clockwise, keep holding it pretty much the same, but this time use your thumb to push the tension lever.

There are many many variations of this, and I'm sure that you will find one that is right FOR YOU.

You could always try putting the tension wrench in the lock, sit on your right hand, and tell yourself to just turn the thing in as many ways as you can think?
Might help you better than someone elses idea of comfort. :)

Hey...

The only real answer to your question is what suites you... try different methods of holding your locks. Try using a vice.. try mounting them in wood... try holding them in your hand. I dont think there is no right or wrong way aslong as you a comftable holding it that way. I personally prefer to hold them in my hand.

Have fun!

Hello there...

Like everyone as said its whats ever best for you...But i would say mount locks on wood or a vice
But if you can try to put them on a Door or something else because there is nothing better than learning to do it that way because there is always something in the way and you cant do it like you would like too...

Hope you understand what im saying i have had a few pints today
