pak-a-punch

Anyone used one of these pak-a-punch? and if so are they any good? Do they wear out easy? I'd like to be able to cut keys in the field at say a lockout and wondered if this or a machine would be better.

The pack a punch works great and will last a long time only being used to cut keys while on the road. The problem with the pack a punch is its limited selection of blanks that can be cut with one. I would much prefer to spend the extra bit for an hpc punch machine and have alot more flexibility in the keys that can be cut.

To answer your questions though, yes the punch works very well and is surprisingly accurate. The tool is also quite well made and should last a very long time only being used to cut to code on the road. I personally would not use it for duplication on the road as it will cause unnecessary wear. Perhaps the best quality of the tool is its price. If a person was say an institutional locksmith working with only one system (ie schlage primus) the pak a punch with a low cost duplicator could not be beat from a cost standpoint.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Useing steel keys all the time considerably speeds up the wear factor but yes punches are a good filed tool especially for auto work.

What would be a good choice for a mobile duplicator / code machine?

Depends on what your wanting to power it with, if useing an inverter or generator then the worlds your oyster and it depends on where you live on availability if you want to run it from a 12v van power source you need to look for those types which are not that common.

www.batteryjunction.com sells an inverter that should support the most heavy duty grinder. 350 Watt (650 surge) for only $27. I think the biggest grinder requires less than 300 Watts.

 Leave things like that alone, you will have nothing but trouble and they will blow up, mine is 3500watts and i wouldnt reccoment anything below 3000w if running key machines etc, there is a couple of good threads o inverters and genorators if you do a search.

Sorry but 350watt is next to useless.

Well since this is only going to be part time, and the chance of me cutting or making dup keys on the road are going to be slim I may just stick with a hand punch. I'll look into the hpc model a bit more.

Thanks
