Help with Master Lock

Postby shlov1 » 26 May 2005 13:24

I am new to lockpicking. I have read everything on the site and bought the visual guide along with my 1st pick set about 2 weeks ago. I am able to open most simple doors and lots of little waffer locks. I can easily open one of my cheap padlocks, but I have a master lock that I just can get open. It is one of the thin gold ones and says No 140 on it. have the key so I know I am turning the right way. I am obviosuly getting some of the pins becasue the plus turns almost all the way, but then no matter what I do I can not get it to pop. I am using a hook pick (seems to work best for me on most locks). I've been working on it for about 30 minutes of and on for the last 5 days and I'm going nuts. I'm sure it is an easy lock to pick, but being new it is frustrating after getting others open so easily. Please help.

Master 140 has spool pins. When you get to the hard stop on the plug, ease off the tension slightly and repick the pins. One which tries to force the plug in the opposite direction to the tension wrench, will be a spool. Expect to find more than one. When the false set spool sets correctly, don't be surprised that other pins will unset. Your task is to find the setting order whilst correctly setting these spool pins. Once you know where they are, the task is a lot easier.
