Tubular Picks/Locks

Postby Scatman » 13 Sep 2004 15:47

Is the pinconfiguration of an 8 pin versus a 7 pin such that one could use an 8 pin pick on a 7 pin lock?
Does anyone have any diagrams/pictures that show the layout of the pins from the front of 7 & 8 pin tubular locks.
Thanks

no pics handy... but maybe this will help. I am doing this from memory so give me a break if I recall incorrectly :)

There are four variations of the original ACE tubular lock:

1) seven pin standard
2) eight pin standard
3) seven pin offset left
4) seven pin offset right

You use the seven pin pick on #1. The eight pin pick is used for #2,#3,#4.

#2,#3,#4 all have their pins 45 degrees from each other but #3 and #4 are missing one pin left or right of top center. The pin positions allows the eight pin pick to work on these three locks. (one pin of the pick simply does nothing.) The point of reference for the pins is 12'oclock.

#1 only seven pins, but they are located slightly off the of the centerline. Effectively lining up between the picking pins of the eight pin pick. The point of reference for the pins is 22.5 degrees off of 12'oclock.

If you buy a SouthOrd 8-pin you can modify it to be used in the 7-pin configuration. You'll have to swap the tension pin back and forth depending on which configuration you'll be using. If you'll be working on a lot of 7 and 8 pin tubulars you might want to get both picks. If you'll be using it mainly on the 7 (or 8 ) then you can save yourself some money and do the mod. Here's a link to the mod I did on my pick and it still works great on both 7 and 8's.

Hope this helps.

Thanks UnLock,

As you may have read in other threads... I have a very old set of tubular picks that are not 'convertible'. So, this is handy info for those needing to save a few bucks.
