Im quite new to lockpicking, but have always been fascinated by the skill. Anyways, I have the basic 12 piece lockpick set and im working on a Masterlock No. 3 for about 1 month. I've opened 2 other locks before but that was just from raking.
Anyways, i'm stuck on the Masterlock No. 3 and was wondering if I could get some tips on it. I use the half-diamond pic, but how do I lift the back pins without lifting the front pins? I tried the hook, but I just can't feel the pin with that pic. Lastly, what are some good locks that I can pick up at a local home depot or something, preferably a lock that I can open and see the pins?
Thanks,
BarleyMob

Go to Walmart and pick up the Brinks Model # 101-45091 House Key Padlock. It can be rekeyed to work with your existing house key. Bonus: This package contains everything you need to re-key this Padlock to match your existing house key.
It comes with a pin Key decoder, Hex wrench, and a bag of colored pins.... it is $12. and is like a thousand padlocks in one since you can re-key and re-pin it easily....and has two different versions, the Schlage or KwikSet...get both if ya can afford it.

I'd guess but filling out your profile will tell me for shure. BTW: It's considered good habit here.
You should try to get comfortable with the hook as it's one of the most usual picks. A half-diamond should do the job too.
There is a design galled "deep curve" which tries to minimize the unintended interaction of the pick with pins, and it does well. The "seach" funktion will tell you more about it, if you ask it.

I searched the forum and found some help with the masterlock no.3 and finally opened it. I opened it by raking it and got it once by picking. I actually felt the pins and could feel the back pins binding, which was pretty cool. I can't seem to get in anymore, but I know I felt it that one time.
thanks,

You can take out the security pins and use all straight pins or add a spool when you want to practice with them in, it's real easy to mix & change the pins.

I've noticed something like this too, with several locks. I'll work at it and work at it, then I'll get it opened for the first time. If lock it back up I can then pick it again without too much difficulty, but if I walk away and come back it's like I'm back at square one.
The second time is some kind of weird free bonus.
