ScanLock

Postby n2oah » 10 Sep 2005 20:48

I recently got a couple of new locks made by "ScanLock". The keys have the same rounded square shape as a Medeco and they also have a sidebar. (you can't see the sidebar in the picture below) Can someone please provide me with more info about these locks? Maybe a manufacturers website?

I am fairly sure that this was a product that was made for one of the members of Clearstar - for whatever reason it did not get off the ground, and the remaining stock was sold of very cheaply - can't remember who made it though ...

Scan Lock

Postby keysman » 11 Sep 2005 3:19

I believe "scan lock" went out of business.

But if you check out "Scorpion" you will find an almost identical product.
Both Products will take a LORI 80/90 key. You will have to make the side bar portion yourself. (Or remove it completely)

Nice product .. to bad it didn't take off , it offers reasonable key control /pick resistance for a fraction of the cost of Medeco. Cylinders are availble for many different applications.

OK, I know it's a pretty dead thread, but I just got one of these in the mail today (ScanLock). Neat little lock. It is too bad that they're not in production any more. I checked out the above link and noticed this quote about the Scorpion lock:
Non-spring loaded finger side pins and random mushroom top pins make the CX-5 cylinder virtually pick-resistant.
Emphasis added

Talk about underselling! I have a few El-Cheapo brand padlocks with just a single spool pin that make the claim "pick resistant". These guys have a lock with a sidebar and they only claim "virtual pick resistance". Good for them! A little bit closer to truth in advertising. No wonder they haven't caught on. ;)

I bought a $2.00 padlock that said " Pick Resistant Pin Tumbler Mechanism". It has 3 non-security pins. My 6 year old can pick it.

Well, this is indeed a pretty cool lock. Here's some pics of the innards:

Nasty keyway...

And notice the false gates on the sidebar pins...

I'm pretty impressed with this thing, especially if the original retail price was good. Haven't tried picking it, but it was fun to take apart. :P

Cheers!

One additional note. This lock has no security pins at all, top or bottom. The only security are the keyway and, more importantly, the sidebar.

It's like a track/worm auto key. Interesting. :)

Where did you get it from? Can you get another one? I wouldn't mind having a go at one.
