Hello, I have been lurking here for quite some time and picking for about a year and a half. My problem is that I have a brinks "high security"padlock from wal-mart that is very difficult for me to pick. I will post a link to the particular lock later. It is a solid square body lock with a shrouded hasp. I have picked all of my other brinks "high security" locks fairly quickly and consistently and they have 2-3 spool pins that I can feel while picking. This lock is a 6 pin and I have found 4 spools, but all of the bottom pins are serrated and hang up on me. I have resorted to making a tension tool similar to the falle safe tension tools and this has helped tremendously on other locks with spool pins but this one is just kicking my butt. Anyone out there have any tips for tackling this beast.

High security locks suck. I just went out and bought that lock a few days ago and picked it in two days, now it's nothing because I know how.
I used two methods:
1) Pretend all the pins are spool or serrated, and pick with extremely low tension and put very little pressure on the pins.
2) If you know where the special pins are, then put the lightest possible tension on the lock and make sure you have picked them all the way, then add a little more tension and pick the rest.
For both methods I have to adjust the tension as I pick, but you'll get used to it.

I adjust tension also while I am picking. I dont know why this is so hard to pick as I can regularly pick the spool pins in my othr locks. I guess I will just keep trying and when I get to the point I can pick it consistently I will go buy a new one and start on it until I am proficient in picking more than just one.

Do you have a feather touch tension wrench?
They are cheaply made and bought if not.
Yes, I did the same thing, but don't limit yourself to secure padlocks, try to get a hold of high-security door locks too. You probably already knew that though.

no I don't have the feather touch tool. I figured it would eliminate too much feel. as far as practice locks I have about a 12-15 padlocks of assorted brands and 1 kwikset handle set and deadbolt mounted in a 12" 2x4. A schlage handle set and 2 deadbolts. a schlage everest everest cylinder and about a half dozen sargent 6 pin cylinders. I have a good assortment of practice locks but that brinks is kicking my butt.

Well, I am still having a problem with my brinks that is very crappy, but I know why now. This dumbass problem is called Elastic Deformation. The driver pin gets deformed due to excessive pressure on the plug, if a serrated pin gets deformed, the lock is a wannabe Modeco now, it's very hard to pick. Now, if you have the key, see if it turns well, then push on the key a little more and it should turn better, this is how to pivk the stupid deformed pins:
put foce into the plug, not the turn, but the push, then it should pick better, if not, then I reccomend blowing the lock up with some Nitroglycerin or Dynamite, maybe a alcohol bomb or something.

I finally got it. it just takes alot of finesse. Just in case anyone wants the info, both of my locks like this have serrated bottom pins in 1,4,6 pin locations and required heavier torque than usual to pick. There are also spool pins, but they are easy to identify in this lock. if anyone is having trouble with the same lock please drop me a pm and I will do what I can to help.

See everyone!? Even the amazing zeke79 was once a newbie too!
Sorry for bringing back the dead, I've been busy using my google-fu to learn more about this lock and I came across a very old zeke post. I couldn't resist.

Well you missed the periods before and after, but having simple ASCII art-type stuff in your sig is fairly frequent, so I guess I'm not really sure what you're asking me.
Should I know who Blackwave is?

Nevermind, I did a "Search" and I found him. Yes, our signatures do seem similar, but *I* have the almighty PERIODS. Only the elite are allowed to use the periods.
