Lock gets stuck half way

Postby pickit_77 » 19 Sep 2006 18:38

While picking a door lock, which you unlock by turning clockwise and lock by counter clockwise it sometimes gets stuck at 180 degrees of turning and wont move/unlock. Could the pins falling down because they are upside down be getting the lock stuck? but then it would do that for keys as well... I have no idea why is does this?

Its the top pins falling slightly into the bottom of the keyway. Put your tension wrench or flat pick in and push up. the plug will then rotate past this point. It wont do it with the key as its flat bottom keeps the top pins from falling down.

and thus the solution for all newb "HELP! MY FRONT DOOR IS STUCK!" posts.

no offence, but that is a very common thing, in fact, one of my practice locks does this, and so i learned fast (and long ago) to just flip my tension wrench over, and do as parapilot stated.

Sometimes though, it gets stuck before it reaches 180 and becomes too hard to turn. It doesnt feel like its stuck.. just like the spring is really strong. It bends my tension wrench. Could it be some locking mechanism?
