Paperclip stuck inside lock, PLEASE HELP! URGENT!

Postby spartan11 » 24 May 2007 19:50

Well I was messing around with the lock to my front door and my tension wrench got stuck. I was pulling it with tweezers when most of it broke off. So now there is a quarter inch of paper clip sticking out of my lock.

I disassembled the whole lock, thinking I could get at it from behind, but now all I have is the cylinder and the paperclip sticking out.

Please help, I need to get this out! We are going out of town this weekend!

I'm going to say pliers. The paperclip should bend before any of the lock components do, so just yank on it real hard.

(Is anyone collecting these posts? They need to be added to the FAQ somewhere under 'But why can't I pick locks that are in use?')

and people wonder why i say this........

If you're looking for locks to pick, buy some but, DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RELY ON
I repeat DO NOT PICK LOCKS YOU OR ANYONE ELSE RELY ON, they can and will break, then your house/car/safe/chasity belt is vulnerable or unable to be opened (think: emergency situation).

use a broken key extractor or make something similar

Dude, I've been pulling non stop.

Is there anyway to take apart the cylinder? There is something that almost looks like a nut, except it's the same shape and diameter as the rest of it, but it has a grip on it. I can't move it though

How do you mean? Do you mean I have to put the key in there? D:

I had it open on the other side, if that counts..

nope the cylinder it's self would have to be in the open position to take apart.. try smacking the crap out of it on a hard surface keyway down

Hope it wasn't an expensive lock. daddy's gonna be mad!

A picture of the actual lock would help. you need to remove the retaining clip/screw/bolt and then pick it or shim it from behind if the key wont fit. then remove the plug and replace it with a plug flower.

THEN and this is the most important step.

Call a locksmith because by now you will have done something wrong and made things worse. swallow ur pride and pay a locksmith to fix it.

Can we have this made in to a sticky?

Its a perfect example of why you shouldn't pick locks you depend on.

You might have some success with a hard piece of steel like a jeweler's screwdriver or a street sweeper bristle if you remove the tail piece and try to dislodge the paper clip.

The other thing you could do is try to shim the cylinder from the back.
1. Remove tail piece

2. Get a really thin piece of metal. Aluminum from a pop can will sometimes work. If not, those security tags from CDs/DVDs and other items often have some really thin metal.

3. Insert the shim between the shell and the plug on the back side lifting the pins to their sheer line and slipping the shim between the top and bottom pins.

4. When you have all the pins at the sheer line the plug should turn, but be careful, it will slide out of the shell if you let it and springs and pins will go flying.

5. Get something the same diameter as the plug and push the plug out. This technique will keep the top pins in the shell if done properly.

6. Remove paperclip.

7. Insert key to make sure all the bottom pins are flush with the cylinder.

8. Use the plug to push the follower out of the shell and return to locked position.

9. Reinstall tail piece and remove key.

10. Never pick locks you rely on ever again.
