Just so you are aware, the keys from bumpkey.us will need to be filed to work properly. It is a federal crime to send pre-modified bump keys in the mail. What you will be getting is "Space and Depth keys."

I saw this in another post, and was wondering if someone knew what modifications to make to the bump keys so that they work properly. Any help would be appreciated.[/quote]

As far as I know it's not a crime to ship modified bump keys since I don't think there is even a law in most places to enforce such a thing. They're only saying that so they don't get in trouble.

Well thats good to know, but I'm still having some trouble with them. Instead of getting the lock almost every try like in the videos, I'll get it like 5 times in a 100 tries. I've been trying different bump hammers and different pressures so hopefully I can work something out right.

A lot of time what I do is remove 1 mm or so off the shoulder for the negative shoulder method and use the pull back method together when I'm having trouble. This usually work most of the time. Also try applying turning tension at different parts of the bow of the key.

I asked my local postmaster about the legalities of mailing bumpkeys. The law is very clear. Any device to pick or bypass a lock may only be mailed to a locksmith or a locksmith student. The site you mentioned only sells unmodified keys. They are depth keys. Thats how they get around the law.

Sorry for the triple post.... theres just no edit button :(

Well I took a picture of the key to give you guys a better idea of how they came.

Here it is
http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/8436/key1yf7.jpg

And then I photoshopped it to how i think the cuts are supposed to be made
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/818/key2gz7.jpg

Let me know if this is the right plan of action.

No the bump key was fine the way if came. Kwikset locks tends to use a pretty wide and flat tip on their bottom pins which almost makes them look kind of like their top pins. Thats why the valleys on KW1 bump keys are so wide. If you narrowed it out you would probably start pushing the bottom pins too far up and maybe into the top pin chambers.

I saw a video the other day where the bump key wasn't filed down at the base, so it didn't need to be pulled out, you jus stuck it in, and bumped, and it opened. It worked for the guy after a few tries, but I havn't tried it myself. Good idea though.
