Torsion wrench with fish tape

Postby Gibraltar » 20 Jan 2008 14:05

This is one of my torsion wrench i made with fish tape.

Image

This is fish tape, it was use to put electrical wire trough wall, it cost me 19.99$can. at Home Depot for a 40 feet roll.

Image

Fish tape was very strong,it was thicker and larger than whiper blade insert, it fit perfect on these lock.

Here along with an hpc pick for size comparaison

This is the tool i use

Image

I use a 12inch bolt cutter to cut the line not plier.

I heat the metal with a small torch so it was easier to bend

Image

This is how i bend it, with the hammer so it have a perfect angle.

Image

I finish the tip of wrench with a file or sandpaper.(if you look closely at the first picture you will see that the tip look perfect )

Other ones i make with same material .

Image

I plan to buy a Dremel with cutting disc to make some serrated ones.

im sorry if my english is not very good, French is my native language.

Thanks for the idea, I'll have to see if any of our suppliers stock it so I can score a roll at cost price

Nice job. I have taken a torch and heated the fish tape a bought 2 to 3 inchs and hammered it down to a bought .30 or .25 thicknesses, then rea tempered it. They make good picks.

This is the torch i use its much more powerful than a lighter 2400°f, its not very precise .

the picture is dark because i want you to see the flame.

Image

what you should buy is this , a pen torch its very cheap and easy to find at any hardware store for 10-15$.the flame is adjustable and its refilable with butane.

How much do those flex?
I fooled around with some fish tape today but the tension wrench I made didn't have much flex. Then again I probably changed the temper when I heated it and put 3 full rotations into the shaft just to make it look cool...
It still beat anything else I was using as a tension wrench.

Hey, thats pretty handy to know!, I never realised how perfect this material is! How long do you need to heat it for it to be useable for bending into shape?

Heat it untill it's dull red and then let it air cool.

This works well but I like to heat them up untill its more than dull red but not bright orange, then i bent it with two pliers and by then its still dull red and i dunk it in water.

I was just repeating what I had tried which was in the instructions of the fish tape.

What are the advantages of quenching?
I know that heating untill dull red and letting it air cool leaves it quite stiff at full thickness.
It's even quite stiff if you take the handle part and heat it near the "L" bend then do a 180 or 360 degree twist, let air cool, and repeat every 1 cm down the whole lenght of the handle. Looks wiked but doesn't have any advantages I know of. 8)
