I just bought this shrouded lock today, and i cant get a feel for it at all. im relatively new to picking but i understand it pretty well. The best locks ive picked are the brass brinks max security and the american 1105, but if anybody has any tips let me know.thanks alot.

for whatever reason, this lock has stumped tons of people. its essentially an american padlock with brinks stamped on the front. it should have spoorated pins just like the 1105 does. just very light tension, pick it till you feel it false set, then test each pin to see if you can feel if there is a spool pin there. after you figure out where the spools are, try picking them in some kind of order... if while picking them you hear the rest of the pins drop try re-setting it to the false set position and try a different pin. as you pick each spool, the lock should return to the false set position, if you think you picked the spool, but the lock is not in the "turned 10 degrees" position then you either didn't pick the spool fully, or you overset the bottom pin.

This has to be hands down my favorite lock for under $20...with light tension and a rake you should be able to get a false set with a bit of a bouncing motion. All the ones Ive messed with have the security pins randomly placed so I have not seen any order to recomend you try, but you will be able to tell when you find them.

KEY WORD, LIGHT TENSION if you try to force it to go along, it will dig in its heels and push back just like I do.
Reverse gear,
when your tension is light enough, you will experience a point when the lock will turn against the tensor as you push a pin up, this is the setting of a spool pin, these locks have several of them and just remember where they are, when you find them, because my experience with one of these locks is that they do not necessarily set in a given order every time.
The first spool pin you set will show this very clearly, however it may not be as clear on the next one, because after one is set, the others cannot move so far in reverse it seems.
so go light and look for the reverse effect, this is only a few degrees and is clearly a response to the pin you are pushing on.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

Just wondering,if you dont mind , what did you pay for this lock? And what kind of tools are you using on it...are they the same tools you use for the brinks and 1105?

i paid $12 for it and im using a flex tension wrench and a short hook. the same stuff i picked the brass brinks with and the 1105. Im better with the brinks than the 1105, if that helps any.

People say the brinks shrouded is just like an 1105, if so they would both have serrated pins and the brass brinks does not that may just b a problem for you...that and its new to you so it will take time to get used to.
Just wondering on the tools incase you were using different picks, that can make a difference.
And I was also just asking about price because I can only find the shrouded for $13.46 and some people say they get them for $10

I just picked that lock today for the first time, took about five minutes. I used top tension and used two picks. A small deforest pick to find the binding pin and a hook to lift the pins to the shear. Try and get a false set and work the security pins from there.

Are the pins in the Brinks Padlock similar to what I can expect in a Brinks door knob, specifically the shape of the spool itself?

Hey Steve,
I'm a new member here, but I hope I can be of some help. I too have a brinks max shrouded 4 pin padlock, and I've found pretty much the opposite to be true of what everyone else has said. I use a long tension wrench with bottom of the keyway tension, which still leaves room for my Southord short hook. I apply a good amount of tension, and feel for which pin offers the most feedback. I then apply pressure to this pin and slowly (I mean reeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaally slowly) reduce tension till I feel the pin click into place. Repeat this for all 4 pins, and the lock should open. If you feel like a pin didn't quite set, it could be a serrated security pin (I think thats what Brinks throws in those disk locks). By picking disk locks this way, I've found that you don't have to worry about the proper amount of tension right away, and instead get to use feedback from the lock to find that perfect tension.
When I first got my Brinks MaxSec Disk open, I inserted the short hook all the way in, then applied tension, and picked from back to front. It just so happened that the pins set from back to front, with the second pin being a serrated pin and needing a little more TLC than the rest.
Hope this helps!
Benny
