Ok i am unsure of the exact rules for having a lockpick set in Australia i have heard only locksmiths are allowed them however i don't think there is a specific law saying this. so the questions are
1. Are lockpicks illegal in Australia
2. Can i order from the US and expect customs to confiscate
3. Are there suppliers in Australia that i can buy from (to avoid customs)
4. Any other suggestions
Any help much appreciated!

the only ones I know of in Australia are Locksmith supply Co and Lock and Key and both only sell to locksmiths
http://www.lsc.com.au/category.paje
http://www.locknkey.com.au/inner/about.html
from memory the only picks they sell are HPC, which I like, and Dyno, which are cheap and from what I have heard they aren't too bad.
I bought the Southord slim line set which I find to be better and a reasonable price.

If you don't want to get them from too far over seas Peterson have a dealer in New Zealand.

Not if you know the methods to defeat customs!

You will have difficulty getting lock manipulation tools from Locksmith Supply Company. I talked to their rep the other day and things have tightened up considerably. You have to be a professional lockie to get them now. Probably due to the "anti-terrorism" laws or some such rot.
I don't see why you can't order from OS. They will probably just write "tools" on the customs dec - who's gonna know ?

Reporting for duty
I was worried when I first ordered my picks from the US too, and it all turned out ok in the end. Twice. No, three times, twice from SouthOrd, and and once from Peterson. Can't remember with Peterson or not, but SouthOrd label the package as 'Tools', and I haven't had any trouble. I'd stick with SouthOrd, because they are cheap and reliable, but some swear by others. it's up to you. I think it's the 14 Piece set from SouthOrd that my friend got and liked as his first set, and he still uses it. Hope that block of text was of some help to you

Locky supply (LSC) doesn't sell picks to non-locksmith customers, neither does L&K iirc.
Your best bet is to order from Peterson or Southord. I swear by my Peterson KPS now, which i have in one of their leather cases.
