My new test samples

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

My new test samples

Postby Romstar » 13 Oct 2004 19:06

I just got done making a few new test picks, and I was hoping that I could get some feedback on them.

Be sure to tell me what you honestly think. This is important to me since I will be making a variety of picks in the near future.

I've seen and played with these a bit (although maybe not these exact ones?) and they feel really well built, and give excellent feedback.

Not to sound rude or anything, I'm really interested in these, but I remember seeing a post where you said you're making picks like no one has ever seen before... I'm guessing these aren't them.

Yep, you are right. These aren't those picks.

Pictures of a set of those ones are coming. I just haven't gotten them photo ready yet. Which is to say that I have to finish the things.

To be perfectly honest, the riveted handle picks are actually more difficult to make than any other type. This is why I am looking for feedback about them.

Thanks,

well - they're very good copies of what's already out there -
if were to buy those particular ones - I'd be looking for
some distinguishing feature other than the shape.

e.g.
the type of metal
workmanship (which I'm sure is excelent)
Price (probably you won't be able to compete on this factor with
the mass produced picks)
Brand name (if I was really vain)

so for the type of metal - I assume these are either carbon or
spring steel? so I wouldn't buy them on that basis.

workmanship? - yes - I would buy them from romstar because I'm
certain that the workmanship and finish would be superior to
HPC/Southord style picks - but I wouldn't buy them on this alone
if there were no other distinguishing factors because I can
grind/sand down cheaper mass produced picks myself.

price - I seriously doubt that you can compete on price with the
mass produced stamped out ones that are all but identical looking,
even if the workmanship is inferior.

I've never handled HPC picks before, but the tangs on your picks look
about the same as the HPC one. this is another factor that I'd be looking
for - especially since heavily warded locks are becomming more prolific.

Brand name? heh.. Romstar systems is not yet a household name. perhaps
when it is - maybe I'd buy romstar picks made out of plastic just to be cool...

having said that - they're the most professional looking non-mass produced picks
I've ever seen.
Oh look! it's 2016!

Craftsmanship looks good. :D Once the handles are polished and the picks are blued, I think you've got something there. :P

I would like to see picks with slightly longer handles, and perhaps for other people, wider handles. Many people like the HPC style picks, and I think that providing even just a little customization/tweaking would really sell. Not that you would say do everything custom per customer, but to offer the same style picks with a handle a bit wider, or an inch longer, or whatever you come up with for suggestions. I personally would love to see a King and Queen picks in this style as well.

Other things that would be nice:

Matador style rakes for dimple locks, and a Mul-T-Lock style set similar to the Brockhage Navagator design, but with a handle of round stock, so that they could be more useable. The pictures I've seen of the Souber set seems to be designed in this regard.

hey - that's an idea - round handles - bit extra grinding involved I guess.
but that would be something!

Okay, a little clarification.

These picks are a sample of one (1) particular style.

There are actually going to be several styles, and materials.

Anyone who has seen an old style Dominion pick will remember the cast aluminum handles. They were oval in shape, and were excellent.

I will be offering these at a later date.

In the works now are solid stainless bar stock with integral handles, as well as cast rubber and plastic handles in a few shapes.

I will make longer, wider, thicker (sounds perverse actually) handles, and will have sample pictures of those in the future.

These are samples of one style only. Standard riveted handle picks.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Can't wait to see the ones Romstars making for me, same style handle just wider, and even prettier, plus I can finally have that perfect Hook and quasi hook set I've wanted. SWEEEEEEEEEET.

As for the price, its not that big of an issue, especially since I am getting a custom sized, and custom shaped picks. They will be in slimline and all.

I can barely wait....

Quality looks wonderful, at least from what I can tell looking at a picture. I love those style handles, but the ability to customize it would be great (making it bigger, wider, etc.) Are you planning on letting people make special orders? I would have to think that would give you a big advantage over the big suppliers.
