Removing the plug

Postby Chronos » 3 Nov 2004 18:06

Hey, I have heard a lot of people saying that a good way to learn is to buy a lock, remove the plug and than take out some of the pins. I have looked all over this site and I can't figure out how to remove the plug. I'm sorry if it is here and I am jsut missing it, but can somone help me?

depends on the lock but usually its just a clip on the end of the plug that needs to be removed in order to let the plug be removed. then just insert the key and turn 90 deg and slide it out with a follower in order to stop the top pins from falling out.

It depends greatly on the lock. but here are instructions on how to remove pins from a Kwikset, Schlage and similar pin tumbler locks:
http://www.gregmiller.net/locks/disassemble.html

And I talk about removing pins from one of my Yale locks in this thread:

Could you describe more about the lock, or can you find pictures of it anywhere?

Just to add a bit to what Jow said, since he kind of made it sound really simple and easy. But if you have never removed the plug from a lock before, proceed VERY SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY! Also, think about your moves three times before making them.

If you proceed incautiously you can end up with escaped pins, bent springs, a hard reassembly job and in the worst case a broken lock with springs jammed in the plug.

So just don't go at it glibly, is all I'm saying...

There are three ways to take the cylinder out of a lock. Before applying one of these techniques you need to pop the c-clip off the back of the lock or you need to unscrew a bolt type thing. Kwiksets have c clips and schlages and baldwins have a screw thing.

Once you take the thing off the back of the lock you can try one of the following three techniques to take the cylinder out.

1. you can insert the key, turn the cylinder around 90 degrees then push the cylinder out with a follower tool.

2. you can pick the lock if you don't have a key and turn it around 90 degrees and pop the cylinder out with a follower tool.

3. if you don't have the key to the lock and you can't pick it you can use a technique called shimming. To shim a lock you take off the c clip or screw thing then you insert a blank key into the lock. Once the blank key is in you insert a thin piece of metal in the back off the lock and move the key back and forth while applying a slight pressure on the thin metal sheet. If you do this correctly the metal sheet will move forward every few strokes and it will eventually open the lock by holding the spacers up.
Once the lock opens you can turn it around 90 degrees and push the cylinder out with a follower tool.

Once you get the cylinder out you can easily take 1 or 2 pins out of it by tipping it over and holding your finger over the pins that you want to stay in.

To remove spacers and springs get a plastic bag and slowly back the follower out of the lock inside the bag until you remove however many springs and spacers you want to remove.

After this put the cylinder back in the plug very quickly while having it tilted at an angle. You want an angle so the spring doesn't put the spacer into the first or second hole. (i learned this the hard way)

Thats the basics to repinning a lock. Good Luck!

By the way you can make a follower tool out a 1/2 inch wooden dowel. Any you can get the thin piece of metal/shim stock out of dvd security packets.

I second keeping it inside a plastic bag your first time. That way all the springs will be caught
Once you've got the hang of it you'll learn how to hold it so the springs do not fly out
Its a real bummer if you lose a pin or spring.
