Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

I won, I won, I won

I won an Ultimate Challenge Practice Lock in an on-line contest. My new lock arrived today.

It's a pretty cool lock. I've had a chance to play with it a little already and in my opinion, it's a great concept in practice locks. According to the website, it comes with at least 75 different pins but I count more (estimated counting, I only have so much time) and several spool pins. And, as you can probably see, you can swap out, remove, or add pin stacks by removing the short set screws over each pin stack. It's nice to be able to work with only 1 pin stack without effecting the rest of them.

I've been picking for a while but thought it would be good to get back to the basics and really get the feel for binding order and when a pin reaches the shear line. I'm playing with 3 pin stacks right now and it is an easier way to feel what's happening inside the lock.

Even though I've been successfully picking 5 and 6 pin locks, I plan to slowly work my way up to all 6 pin stacks and work on my spp skills as I go. It's my slow down and smell the lock pins plan. I have never had any consistant luck with spool pins so I'm looking forward to having control of where they are in this lock so I can really get the feel for them too.

What a great prize! What was the contest about? How did you win ? What is the little bag of pins? for? Sorry for so many questions, it just seems like such a nice prize! I hope you enjoy it.

The bag contains about 100 random pins, pin springs, spool pins, and spare set screws. This is a practice lock that can be re-keyed so you can create different challenges for yourself. Or for the new lock picker (or someone trying to improve like me), you can remove pin stacks and only work with a few pin stacks until you really get the feel of picking locks. It's a great, simple training tool. And since I won it for free, the price was perfect!

The contest is still going on. I'm new here and don't want to break any rules about advertising or competing sites so I'm hesitant to give too much detail.

But if you google "Ultimate Practice Lock" and poke around the seller's website, I'm sure you can find the details.

For those who are interested, the contest is still going on. There are more locks to win. Spooky points you to the right place above.

Congratulations Spooky.

That looks like a good lock to practice with and easy to pin. Enjoy your new toy
