Dismantling A ERA Tumbler Lock

Postby Kevin63 » 19 Feb 2005 11:05

I'm sorry if this has already been posted and explained but after a quick search (yes my new picks came today and I'm excited so couldn't really take all day searching) I couldn't find any guide on dismantling an ERA Tumbler Lock. I found the guide with the photos and it was a Yale lock. I didn't think that mattered but the pictures on the dismantled lock had holes running down it, my lock doesn't have these holes.

I bought the five piece set of lock picks with the freebie book called 'Easy Pickings' They too, tell you how to dismantle locks but mine just won't come apart.

If anyone could write out a quick guide and a few pics on how to dismantle this ERA Tumbler lock I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

*Why isn't there any edit button*

Ok to help you people out I copyed a picture from the other Yale guide to show you what my lock looks like:

Thats basically my lock, but my lock doesn't have those holes running down it and doesn't have that big piece of metal sticking out the back.

Any help is much appreciated!

Does your lock have a clip similar to the one in the picture, or is there a cam screwed to the back of the cylinder?

This is important because you either have to unscrew the cam, or remove the clip.

Once that is done, use the key and a plug follower to disassemble the lock.

You dismantle this lock the same as a yale just ignore the fact it doesnt have the piece of metal along the top. That was used in the factory to load the pins when making it so dont worry about it. Get yourself a piece of dowel rod about 12mm thick and cut a slot in the end to make a follower to help load the pins.If you dont want to make one somebody is selling them on ebay Also when you do pull it apart put it in a bag so you dont lose anything.

here a link to the follower on ebay

You know you have to pick it or put in the correct key before you can pull the plug out right?

Ok i took Direct action and contacted the company who i bought the products off here is thir reply:

'Hello again Kevin,

The ERA lock is very simple to dismantle but if you haven't done it before you might find that you find it tricky. This is the basic procedure:

You will need:

1 Plug follower
1 pair of fine tweezers
1 pair of circlip pliers

Procedure:

Take the lock of the board.
Remove the circlip from the back of the lock. (It looks like a C-shaped piece of metal) with the circlip pliers.
Carefully insert a key into the lock all the way.
Now turn the key about 30 degrees clockwise.
Insert your plug follower in the back of the lock, making sure you keey it pressed close to the lock plug at all times.
Gently push the plug out of its shell, making sure the bottom pins don't fall out.
Lay the bottom pins out in the order they are in the lock.
Then carefully slide out the plug follower. - Careful, the top pins will fly out when you do this - don't loose them.
Lay them out in the order they are in the lock.

To reload the lock, reverse to procedure.

You can't really do this job without the proper tools, so I suggest you obtain them from our site when you can. I hope this is of some help.'

Ive delted the repliers name just incase he doesnt want it posted everywhere!

But my problem is the equipment hes talking about is pretty expensive, is there anyhting else i can use? I'ce tried using tweezers to remove the C piece of metal but they just bend.

Any help i would much appreciate it!

Are you removing the circlip at the back? I can't see what else you could be doing wrong, it really is simple!
