Upgrade your cheap pick gun

Tool recommendations, information on your favorite automatic and/or mechanical lockpicking devices for those with less skills, or looking to make their own.

Upgrade your cheap pick gun

Postby dab » 17 Jan 2007 15:39

The main difference between expensive and cheap pick guns is the tension
setting. Higher end guns allow less tension to better pick weak spring locks
like kwiksets. If you drill a hole behind the tension wheel you allow the screw to protrude from the back of the tool allowing less tension.
...or just buy the Life lockaid made by majestic.

I think it's French. I can't be sure since I don't speak French.

You know what? You are my hero. We just bought an Ilco pick gun and I hate the friggin' thing. It snaps so hard that I think it actually popped the cap that keeps the pins inside the cylinder off of a cheap walmart kik cylinder. Its been making me really angry. On the plus side, I'm building my manual picking skills because when its -20 degrees outside and you're trying to get a customer into their house, you learn pretty quick :D

I'm gonna try drilling a hole at the back of the gun, just behind the wheel, tomorrow. I'll try to get pics and report back.

Just wanted to say I finally had a free moment today to try this out. Like I said earlier, this gun is a piece of junk so I couldn't care less if I ruined it. HOWEVER, this works like a charm. My cheapo snap gun actually opens locks now! And it only took 5 minutes of my time. See pics below:
