any advantage to a vibrating pick?

Tool recommendations, information on your favorite automatic and/or mechanical lockpicking devices for those with less skills, or looking to make their own.

any advantage to a vibrating pick?

Postby hgeek » 25 Feb 2008 19:11

Is there any advantage to creating a vibrating lock pick?

I am very curious if it has any advantages whatsoever.

Thanks

A properly made one can open some locks quickly with practice. I made a couple of them following the various homebrew guides. The one made with the Hummingbird flosser really doesn't work much better than a manual pick for me. One I made from an electric razor does work quite well on some of my locks but has failed to open several as well.

In the end you are best off by learning to pick manually. Then if you want to play with an electric pick for fun you'll have more luck with it because you'll know what to feel for in the lock. Even with the electric picks there is still a degree of skill and technique involved.

I have never seen a need for it. Maybe later on as I encounter more and more locks as a lockie but as a hobbyist there really is no need for it. It really is a waste of money and dulls your manual picking ability, and your manual ability is what locksports is all about in my opinion.

It's a tool that both you and your girlfriend/wife can enjoy.

I have never opened a lock with an electric shaver pick that I couldn't SPP but I have opened them a lot faster using it. It is like raking or using a snap gun it is fun but you really don't learn good lockpicking skills and when you run into a lock that can't be raked or snapped open you need SPP skills.

The real advantage is that if you use it just right........ ohhhhh baby.............feels good!

I've yet to make a successful one!

To be fair I've only tried the once.

I made a vibrating pick out of a Humming bird tooth flosser and it was rubbish, burning out after a very short time! A point which I understand is a very common occurence and which I would have learnt with less trouble by simply reading the forum!

I have plans currently to mke a new one using some Black and DEcker power scissors, in fact I may take some pictures and make an idiots guide of it for posting on the forum.

Cheers

Paul

Vibrating picks can be usefull in the feild like any other tool, but you always have to monitor the charge in the batteries. I started a project that used a wind up motor from old toys as a power source but just got too busy to finish.
