i made a bogota style pick from a hacksaw blade. and can open locks with a rocking/raking motion quickly. [padlocks, deadbolts]. did i just get lucky in my choice of the file i used and of the spacing or is it just easier this way? it takes longer to pick these locks with my keychain pick set using the wavy rake

Sounds like you made a nice bogota.. Also, what type of locks are you picking?

Keychain or jack knife style picks are difficult to use if you are new to picking, its like that for everyone. Best if you get a standard SO pick set to practice with. It'll make the learning process much easier.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Just speaking from experience, I think that if you are doing this as a hobby, you might wish to work on becoming better at using either the hook or the small half diamond. I personally use my hook for most of the locks that I attempt. I think that you will get more satisfaction when using a hook as I think it gives you a better feel of the inside of the lock. If you are going to be a hobbyist, then this will probably be better for you.
Congrats on the Bogota though. They are pretty handy from what I have heard, though I haven't really tried one of those yet. I guess the most important thing is that you have fun. Welcome to the forum.

Nice job on the bogata. I'd suggest that you grab another hacksaw blade, or use the back of the one you have to make your own hook tool. Nothing wrong with the majestic picks, but if you're already making your own, you might want to try it.
Also, I'd suggest polishing up the commercial picks you have.

For a true test of your pick get yourself a Schlage deadbolt to practice on. EZset locks are very easy to open with just about any pick.
