MAGNETIC LOCKPICK

Has anyone tried to make the magnetic lockpicks described in Steven Hampton's book Advanced Lock Picking Secrets?

Well I ordered the parts. I was able to order everything I needed from Mouser, including the Solenoid. Surprisingly they have a 10x AA battery holder listed.

Where do you plan on getting these locks?

Oops, DP.

If you're gonna try to use it on the keycard locks that are used nowadays (I'm thinking of the ones I've seen in hotel rooms, that have the magnetic stripe) I don't think that it'll work. But.. I'd like to hear what kind of success you have (or don't have).

Are you planning to use a 555 or something similar to feed a square wave to the solenoid, or are you going to keep switching the polarity manually?

Actually I don't really expect it to work on a real lock. In fact, I'm not even sure how I'm going to test it yet. I have electrical engineering and computer science degrees and honestly after watching Iron Man I just felt like building an electronic circuit.

One of the 3 devices in the book requires manually changing the polarity. None of the devices described in the book use a 555. The one I'm going to build is "a noisy amplifier that has high gain and a low impedance output which produces a large signal noise, enough so that it will drive a 24-volt solenoid coil and produce a continual oscillating magnetic field with random frequencies rich in harmonics."
