Klom Electric Pick Gun

Postby TWLocks » 1 Oct 2014 14:55

Hi Guys,

I've just bought a Klom Electric Pick Gun, had a practice with it on some euro and rim cylinders without success.
Has anybody got any tips on how to use the Klom epg.
Tried light tension heavy tension but nothing.
Cheers

You've wasted your money on a tool that mostly works on cheapo locks. Throw it in gasoline nd burn it, sell it, give it to a relative u don't like and learn to pick a lock pal... You'll feel better if you know how to legitamitely pick a lock

Hold on; that's mostly false.

I know plenty of locksmiths that use electric picks. It is a preference and, given the nature of their work, it can work to their advantage. After all, it's advantageous for them to open a door, for example, as quickly as possible no matter how its done. If you're of the cloth that thinks lock picking is only lock picking when performed in the purest of forms, ala single pin picking, so be it, but the very definition of the word doesn't match your interpretation. Apologies.

To you and the OP, yes, they work. I've used them multiple times on everything from Sargent padlocks with original LA keyway cylinders to stubborn LSDA or General Lock grade 1 cylindrical leversets (sure as heck beats disassembling the entire lock just to have access to the retainer).

The important thing to remember when picking with pick guns, mechanical or electric, is that you need to move the gun in and out of the lock and rock it up and down at angles while using it. Simply putting the gun in and turning it on or pulling the trigger will rarely give you results. They bounce the pins, yes, but by moving the gun in and out and at angles, you're compensating for a pin's potential distance from the shearline. In other words, lifting on a 0 or 1 pin will move it closer to the shear line and increase your chances that the "bump" sets the top pin. This is very important with a mechanical pick gun because the pick swings like a door so some pins receive more/less motion, and thereby force, than others.

I just received mine as well. I noticed it works better if you apply light tension on and off with the tension wrench. The needles it comes with are junk as well, they bend and do not make contact with all of the blades. I made my own out of a hacksaw blade with a rake template. Also dial it down so it only goes up and down about 1/8th of an inch because stock it comes with about an inch of travel. I am not too impressed with it but it will pick all easy locks I can pick, ie mater padlocks, and kwickset. It also really helps moving it at an angle and keeping it level with the bottom of the pins. It is not like the youtube vids look like. I will show it to someone and they will try and try and still cant get it then i will try it on a lock i practiced on and it will work in seconds. So it still takes skill and luck! I first thought it was really cool but now I am just working on single pin picking as I think it is a lot more rewarding! I also made some mods to mine. I put 3 750 mah low discharge batteries to replace the nicads so after months of not using it will still work. I also hot glued a led to the top so i can see where the pick goes. After that I changed the long trigger pull of the handle and put a very easy to move momentary swich on it. It makes it alot easier to control it on and off. What can I say I love to tinker and modify things! Take this with a grain of salt as I am still new to this fun hobby!

P.S maybe someone can chime in on this idea i had. I noticed that sometimes it is very hard to get the pick in certain key ways with the electric pic gun. If i changed the pick out with a key that fit in the lock cut to the deepest level like a bump key. Do you think that would work better than the needle? Or would it not work because with the groves it would not allow it to move up and down? Just a thought that struck me.

On youtube alot of the videos say to keep pumping the tension wrench because the electric pick is so strong it over sets the pins you just keep pumping or resetting the pins till you hit the mother load.

I have used both electric and manual pick guns. They DO work, but they work best on locks w/o security pins. I can't say that I find them "fun" or "enjoyable". Owning a set of picks and using a pick gun is like owning a boat, motor, rods and reels and buying dinner at the fish market.

IMHO, the whole idea of the "hobby" is the manual manipulation of the lock with hand-held picks. Be it a hook, a rake, a bobby pin, etc, the "sport and challenge" is getting the lock open using the manual dexterity skills that you've developed over time thru practice / fail / learn / practice / fail / learn / practice / fail / SUCCESS !!

I look at pick guns as just another "bypass tool" - like butterfly shims, cylinder shims, knives, etc, etc, etc. Not much talent / practice required. Hence, not much personal satisfaction.

Of course, if you're a professional locksmith or apprentice and time is of the essence, and you can write your tools off as a business expense, then it makes sense to have every option available to get the job done in the most timely manner.

If you just want to see an electric pick working - look on YouTube. Maybe your locksmith will demo his for you.

Again .... Just my personal opinion. I enjoy the challenge of "finding the binder" and working from there. But that's just me .... :)

I like the rocking advice on using the pick gun. Ive tried to use one, snapper too with minimal success. I believe that once you develop the feel for picking you might have a harder time using a gun. That might be why so many locksport guys don't like the pick gun, aside from the points already made.

There is a newer version that moves straight up and down ,
google "semi auto pick gun" and take a look, it is more like bumping
than the older type.

Edit: the semi auto is manual though, not electric.

Purchased the KLOM electric lock pick gun about a month ago from DHgate.

It's not bad but has a bad design.

The off-set collar that is on the motor shaft is made of plastic... eventually it will wear out and will not make contact with the bearing arm.

I am not sure why the engineers don't use a metal collar instead.... maybe to sell more?

I bought my boyfriend a k-303 RPM-12000 and the plug for the charger was a weird one that only had two pins. It clearly won't fit into any US wall plug. Does anyone know what adapter I need to get in order for him to charge it? I have no clue about these things so it's like a foreign language to me. Thanks in advance for the help.

I meant it's a k-303 RPM-12000 electric lock pick gun. I'm sure that's an obvious thing but I just wanted to clarify. You never know nowadays
