SouthOrd E100 - Adjustment of Pick Questions

Postby RaviuN02 » 25 Jul 2005 18:10

Hi All,
New here. I am a property manager in southern california and I just bought one of south ord's electric pick's. I have read a good couple hours on here as to the usage but I still have yet to open a lock. The movies make it look like cake so I have no idea what is going on.

A lot of the info I have seen is in relation to the snap guns and I am not sure what equivelant the tension screw is on the electric pick but I imagine it to be the grub screw. I think my problem is the adjustment of the tool. How much travel should the end of the needle have? Is there a good way to figure out the sweet spot?

Any help would be appreciated.

In theory, the optimal amount of movement will depend on the springs in a lock, and would have to be adjusted according to each lock. In practice however, it seems that a certain range of motion will do well on most locks, without adjustment. Try toying with whatever knobs are on the pick, experimenting on locks with open keyways, like Kwikset's standard keyway, KW1 I believe.

ok sounds good. I went to home depot and bought 3 locks. Defiant (home depot house brand), Kwikset Max Security Deadbolt, and a Schlage Light Duty Deadbolt. Hope I can get some open tonight and move up the ladder.

You never mentioned if you can open the locks by hand/picking. If you cant pick them open then your chances of success are very slim with the southord. Luck will be your trump card.

Tyler,

The screw on the bottom (below the trigger button) is used to adjust the amount travel on the tip.,.. Adjust it so the tip moves about 1/8" (roughly). Next, make sure you understand how the internals of the locks work... Its not just about putting the tool the front and it magically openning.... As when your manually picking, move through the pins and individually tap them with the pick gun... It sometimes works well when its upside down because then your forcefully hitting the pins and the tip doesn't disengage from the motor because of the tension from the pin springs...

So basically, read up on manul picking, and do the exact same thing except using the electric tool to tap the pins instead.

BTW. You might have better luck if you try going really really light on the tension wrench.

Cheers.
