Peaky - do you mean constant pressure ?. As mentioned earlier in the thread, you often need to "feather" the tension when using electric/snap picks in order to reset pins that you've incorrectly set.

The image I have in my head (very simplistic) is a pick that not only bounces up/down, but also side to side - all actions simultaneously. It doesn't matter if you pick it the wrong way, as you can spin it back.

Hmmmm it was only an idea,

I dont have loads of experiance with pick guns,
my idea was more aimed at manual guns, i have a southord one and i have always used a little tension all the time whilst clicking it,
i have opened yale x5's etc this way,
but if you are telling me differant then i bow to your expertese,

For what its worth (and the fact i have taken the little time to do it) here is a pic of the idea i meant http://tinypic.com/view.html?pic=19341z perhaps its back to the drawing board.

Peaky - I'm not knocking your idea, just adding my penny's worth based on practical usage of an electric pick. I have more success when I don't use constant tension, it may be that others differ in their approach.

There are also restricted keyways to consider - when it's difficult to even get the pick blade in !. That's why I thought of the single blade - but with it vibrating horizontally and vertically, with the horizontal movement timed at the peak of the vertical movement.

Keep those ideas coming.....

snapping

Postby raimundo » 14 Jan 2005 16:25

If tension is already on the top pins when the bottom pins are snapped, and snapped hard, it could still work, because if all the top pins jump it could momentarily loosen the binding. I would combine the experiment with generous squirts of wd40

   silent that was sooo funny, i will have to learn to click next and previous when ever i go and look at pics on there in future. It does say no obscene pics and to report them but i dont have the heart, its fine by me.

Anyway back to the thread,

Rockford i didnt take it as you having a go, you all have more experiance than me with electric guns as i havent orded mine yet, and have never played with one,

To be honest i hadnt considered restrictive keyways at all.

Sorry about the url, i will post the link in future, does the link not work with some systems?

I am having a think about a differant sig as we speak as im bored of mine anyway.

vibrating horizontally and vertically, with the horizontal movement timed at the peak of the vertical movement.

It would need to rotate rather than move side to side, but i know what youre meaning and will have a think and get back to you all,

Do you think the pick blade could be deep enough (height wise) to turn the keyway and still fit in a restricted keyway?

only a thought

This is pretty basic...its made in MS-Paint...so bear with me.

But is this what you sort of had in mind?

http://tinypic.com/1981uc

Maybe?...My brain doesn't really go any further than that in schematic drawings right now.

If that picture is too tiny, right click it and save it to your desktop. Then you should be able to open it and zoom to see the text and the (minimal) details.

To be honest thats not what i was meaning if talking to me,

My idea was an addition to the pick gun which would be fastened on one side of the gun whether it be top, bottom, left or right.

In my idea there is no sping involved whatsoever the springiness would come from the blade ie hold a plastic ruler at one end and turn the oppostite end and let go, this is how the expensive plug spinners are manufactured.

I have had a think about having a rotating vibrating pick blade and cant get round the 2 problems of,

1) The necassary mechinisim putting up with the greif of the number of times the tool vibrates and
2) If the keyway doesnt turn on the first time it will destroy the keyway or give you a sprained wrist.

Yes no 2 could be got round with a friction clutch but how big and heavy do you want a pick gun and how important is it to drink whilst doing it?

I did the quick 1 minute sketch as it was quicker to do than a full on working drawing, if anybody needs one i shall sit down and do one, otherwise it will be just as quick to make the part and post a pic which i shal do later,

The blade could be interchangeable so a thin small 'tension' part would fit the restricted keyways.

*Romstar gave me this idea so it his idea not mine

Why not use half a key blank or diffent height metal. They could "clip" on the front. You could use the tension just from the gun.(This is where everyone else ideas come into play) Then once its picked you can remove the keyblank or metal and click the plug spinner button.
