Difinitive tubular pick poll.

Postby Prof3ssor » 12 Feb 2004 2:45

I finally am posting, I'm in the market for a new tubular pick. I've read through all the tubular pick informantion on the site. Alot to digest, I come home from an eight hour shift today and new posts have been put up. Every time i come. It never will end.

This is my febile attempt to end the debate (or fuel it). Ignoring price, what is the best overall pick. There's alot of different models and manufatcurers. Most are here, though I didn't hear mention of the high security variety of nine through a dozen pins in one pick... So if you could be kind enough to vote and perhaps post some experiences and a model specification that would benefit us all.

If theres even one vote for home-made I'd better see plans that wok on modern low-tolerance mechanisms.

sniff sniff...

Because mine surely doesn't.

Too bad you have only included a small number of pickbrands.

Here is a list of the brands I can think of:
HPC, South Ords, Rytan, falle safe, Peterson, A1, Majestic, LAB, Hoobs

What are the odds of them being voted for if they are not mentioned on the site. Those are for the other category. Apparently they are not worth putting up if you voted for HPC. What model anyway? There's alot of those too. Seven or eight I believe.

I'd like to see how the newer southord stack up against the others if anyone owns two. By the way what 8-pins can be used in 7-pins? Besides what has already been mentioned.

I use the HPC handled picks. The older variety but similar to the 2000 Series Stainless Steel Picks. It is the only set I have so I am bias.

A number of people like the rytans or the peterson picks. There are a number of South ord people (maybe this is because they are easier to obtain for non locksmiths). I do think though there are a number of people who are non SO or HPC fans.

Of course Cityspider is an exception to all rules and likes the south ord handless ;)

Oh and then you have lockpickroy who likes to make his own picks. But that is only because he has had alot of practice at it 8)

I am of the opinion of whatever floats your boat is fine with me.

I don't recall the exact model number, but mine is an HPC aluminum 7 pin tubular pick. Works great, but expensive.

I've seen the HPC in action. I've heard the Peterson is great. I'd like to go with an HPC but only if it can pick both 8 and 7 along with an easy lock feature. Otherwise I'm more inclined to buy the new Southord 8 and modify it.

By the way the best picks I have ever used I made (how peculiar). I use high carbon steel that I temper. Unfortunately the carbon makes it prone to rust. After they went bad I decided it isn't worth the effort when the Majestics that I bought off Southord awhile back work just fine. I still make and use my own tension wrenches. I just can't find any up to my standards.

I have the Peterson. Definately an awsome tool, but kinda large and bulky. You need to have a mounted lock to use it effectively.

I enjoy the HPC pick if I am picking a Kryptonite tubular padlock or if I am picking the very popular Kryptonite bicycle lock. However, I use the Peterson Pro-1 if I have to pick open a tubular cam lock. There are found on cheap gun cabinets, vending machines, and you will also occasionally see them on alarm boxes. I found the HPC inadequate for the cam locks. All of the tubular cam locks I have encountered have had springs that were too strong for the HPC model that is so popular. I would like to obtain that pick that is like to old "Lee" pick (Pro-Lok I think), but it is expensive.

I've only used the Southord one and I know I'm biased but I've never had a problem with them and the success rate is very high.

The only thing with the Southord ones are you must get the newer version of the pick which has a much higher success rate.
