Another Homemade EPG

Postby scorpiac » 10 Feb 2007 19:03

Heres my first attempt at a homemade EPG. Really didn't do very much as you can probably see, the tool I started with needed very little modification. It started out as 3.6v rechargeable Mastercraft electric scissors from Canadian Tire , I think I paid $10.99 on sale awhile back. The whole modification only took about 1/2 an hour. All you need to do is remove the stationary blade (the large lower one in the pictures) then cut down and drill the moving one to accept the pick. Oh I also used a small nut as a spacer on the shaft where the stationary blade used to be to make up for it's absence. All of this is very easily done as the head is removable and then comes completely apart with the removal of 2 screws. Best part is the tool comes with an extra head so I can switch back and forth from EPG to electric scissors when ever I like. Down side is there is no adjust ability but it seems to work pretty well... though I've no prior experience with EPG's and I've only tried it on one cylinder so far (Home Security 5 pin Deadbolt cylinder from Home Hardware) I can manually pick this lock faster than I can open it with the EPG but some one with absolutely no picking experience could probably even open it with the EPG with a little fiddling around.

Seems to be plenty powerful. Good strong action, I was actually thinking maybe too much so... but I've not used a factory made one to compare it to.

Here's a short video clip of me turning it on and of a few times in front of my llaptop screen to just to give you an idea of the amount of action it has, sorry for the poor quality and no audio... best I can do...

thats a lot of movement! is there any way you can modify it to move less?
can you also try it on some other locks to see how effective it is.
thanks.

Ok I've tried it on 2 "Home Security" deadbolt cylinders keyed alike, 3 "Garrison" deadbolt cylinders all keyed different, and 1 "TESA" deadbolt cylinder so 6 deadbolt cylinders in all, opened in pretty decent times, actually 2 of the Garrisons open on the first buzz immediately upon insertion :D . No luck on the 2 padlocks I tried though (Master 930 & American 5200) I think theres too much movement for such small cylinders.

thanks scorpiac, you've now convinced me to try to make one myself. :)
could you make a shorter pick for the padlocks? the shorter length would mean less movement in the end of the pick.

best guess

Postby raimundo » 15 Feb 2007 12:33

Im guessing that the warding in the lock will limit the travel of the pecker :)

You're right it does. I can also limit the movement with a finger tip placed at the base of the pick underneath firmly pressing upwards, this is a bit awkward to do though and not usually necessary for the reason you said.
