am i doing it incorrectly?

Postby hgeek » 25 Feb 2008 19:34

Hey,
I have for a very long time attempted to open various locks of mine with raking and single-picking. never have i succeeded (except for a desk wafer) in opening the lock.
I have read the MIT guide and many others and have attempted for 6 months now, to no avail. I am getting the feeling that my technique is wrong.a

therefore, i have resorted solely to raking because it seems as though it is just as effective, using less time. Needless to say my raking sucks. So i can only assume that i am raking incorrectly. I have tried the Dyno Kwik-pick and that is a waste of 20 bux, and am thinking about using an electric pick or pick gun--issue is i dont have a dremel or grinder.

It is terribly frustrating, i love using locks and seeing how they work but i can never seem to get it correctly.

therefore, after hours of reading and months of practice, i am asking for your help

Can anyone explain
1) the correct technique to rake?
2) Is there an advantage to using an electric rake?
3) is there a snap gun to be made without dremel tools or black mallets (i saw the sticky)
4) The proper technique for bumpkeying? my bumpkeying is also unsuccesful. i am trying the pullout method and i can never get the lock to turn. I purchased my key on bump-j.com

thank you very much--it is much appreciated

I just started out a few months ago, and I started by reading books.
Some suggest to take a 5 pin rim cylinder break it down and remove 2 pins. Start with 3 and once you get the feel move up in line.
start wit Single Pin Picking first. SPP. Raking is not what all the pro's will tell you to do. Take your feeler hook and lift all the pins then remove it slow and listen for them to drop. Do that for a while read, and get fundementals down. Read the thread Do... not try.
My first night I was be fuddled with my 5 pin. I picked it the second day on the toilet at work SPP and it was awesome.
Have fun and Study!

oh, i have done all of the removing pins exercises and whatnot, but when the lock is just there, not open, just presented to me, and i cannot see the configurations, i can never pull it off.

I have read many manuals, tutorials, etc. but it seems as though it just wont work

Can you pick a lock that has had some pins removed? Like a 2 or 3 pin lock? If so, then there is really no different technique in the others. Practice on a really simple, easy lock until you can open it easily. Then progress to a slightly more difficult one.

You didn't mention what locks you were trying to practice on. It is very possible that you have been scrubbing away at a lock with security pins.

If you are limited on funds, go get a Master Lock #3 padlock. they are fairly easy to open. If you've got about $15 USD then get yourself a cheap deadbolt lock and do the pin removal and practice on it. You could even change the pins around once you've mastered it and you'll have a "new" lock to pick (although the picking order might be the same, the depths will be different).

Don't stop practicing on a lock once you've opened it once or twice. Keep at it until you can open it with ease, then move on.

As for help on your technique, no way to really know what it is you might be doing wrong but the most common problem is too much tension. This is especially true when raking.

If you're aiming to be able to pick random locks you may be presented with by friends or co-workers to see your magic skills, then you need to practice on a lot of different locks. Go back and forth. Don't assume that because you've picked it 20 times that next week you'll be able to just pick it up and open it with ease again. For me anyway, I tend to learn a lock and go through the motions that I remember from opening it so many times rather than actually feeling it out and unlocking it's puzzle. I have about 25 locks or so and I bounce from one to the next.

Ok, now I'm rambling.... hope that helped. :)
