I have a few petersons, everyone here would tell you they are really nice picks, most stay away because you pay a little more but they are good quality and comfortable to use

I'm finding that my personal preference is for picks with wider / sturdier handles, which is something that Peterson seems to do well. I've handled (and liked) their City set, which is the one with the large black plastic handles, in comparison to the standard HPC short hook / half-diamond I usually use.

I also own their slender gem and reach tools, which have the plasti-dip style handles. They're great tools, but because they are thin picks with a flexible handle, they wobble a bit more easily than I would prefer. However, you have to expect that when you're using tools specifically designed for paracentric keyways... everything's gonna be small!

Anyway hopefully that gives you a little more info on what the difference is between some of their handles. The tools themselves are of excellent quality, and boy do they ever command a price that reflects that!

I think you will like the peterson picks, I do. I've used them for years, and without regret. I own both the govt. and the spring sets. But it's up to the individual, their needs, and the feel for a tool. It's easier to pick open a lock if your tools are comfortable.

I recently purchased Ken's set from Peterson. I love it. My favorites are the flat 5 and the 3 deep access red handle ones. I can set 4 pins in a Keymark with the diamond- still haven't opened that stubborn bastard though! The flat 5 for top of keyway is great on Schlage. I bought it from them(cheapest price) and truly beleive it's a great value.

I like the Peterson spring steel picks with the textured handles and think the handles are worth the money. It is a really comfortable grip. I make stainless steel picks and usually dip them myself but don't get the exact same grip as on the Peterson picks.

I would not recomend getting a spring steel set though, they flex and stretch, which really wears out the picks, I would definately recomend a stainless steel set or making your own set out of bandsaw blades, that is what I am currently using for picking. If you have access to the tools, give it a try, very fun, very effective :)

They're a bit better than the SouthOrd spring steel ones, but unless you're having trouble with the SouthOrd set, I'd probably save up for some good, high-yield stainless-steel ones. Spring steel picks are good for a beginner, but you'll learn to prefer the "feel" of a C-1070 or similar stainless pick.
The Peterson picks are outstanding all in all, though, so you don't need to feel bad about getting the spring steel ones. Maybe look at an HPC set of high-yield stainless ones instead, though, it'd be better if you're looking for a stiffer pick.

I don't know about making picks from a high-carbon tool steel. They're a bit too brittle in my experience.

I love peterson tools and I use mine everyday. I always have a peterson hook behind my ear that I use for various tasks. I strongly reccomend them, followed by HPC picks sanded down. For stainless though, I only roll with peterson GOV steel. I just bout 1 gov steel short hook and "reach" picks. anything else I don't care as much about.
Another company making good picks is www.lockpicktools.com and they make all of their tools out of stainless. Some of their profiles need a bit of work, IMO, but if you reshape them they are great tools for the price.
Just my two cents.

I have a decent Peterson set and they are great picks, but quite expensive! Picks are very much a matter of personal preference. Expensive Peterson picks won't open more locks than a cheap set -- just like a more expensive oven won't make you a better baker.

I mentioned in another post I was using a very cheap Majestic pick set for years. The Peterson set doesn't allow me to open locks any better but my hands are way more comfortable now :)

This is true. The money spent doesn't directly equate to more openable locks. What I've found is that it generally does have an impact on the lifespan and durability of the tools.

While some don't mind paying for throw-away picks, I'd prefer to buy one set and rarely have to worry about getting replacements.
I use my petersons in my job every day, and I've never had any issues.
If you purchase 2 hooks, 1 diamond and a reach, it's not bank-breaking.

With regards to www.lockpicktools.com , I've done a rather comprehensive purchase from them once before.
All of the picks were in Laminated Ripple Handles, which have very poor quality spot-welds.
One I received in Laminated Ripple Core Handle, which I did not want.
Overall, the steel feels like it's made from compressed Coke cans.
I'm always worried about dropping something on them, causing the handles to de-laminate (4 have).
Now I use one hook pick as my letter opener, and the others are tossed in a cupboard somewhere.

Been using my Peterson picks for about 4 years and I love them! Maybe its cos I got better at picking but still I haven't had to experience any of the Petersons break on me yet (I broke a hook pick at least once years back). And these were used for both hobby purposes and out in the field running lockout calls.
