Great post!

If users could provide feedback per topic importance I would say "Glad I clicked on the hyperlink. Time well spent. DeadlyHunter is an asset to LP101" and on and on.

I spent an hour snooping around the office for pick materials and while doing so, HR dropped off this years Christmas present - a CC quality gift card. Handy as all my plastic is live.

The bobby pin as tension wrench will not work on a Master #1 or if your padlock has a shackle spring which puts tension on the plug. So in the office setting use a scissors tip. I did have success with a pin I bent into a king pick using a multi-tool. I had to cheat using my SO wrench.

Hey, I am glad to see there are some other office supply lock pickers out there! I wrote that article for 2600 because I am always on the lookout for unexpected picking tools and wanted to get people thinking out of the SO box. One thing I didn't mention in the article is that a brass fastener makes a great Sesamee decoder. I can't believe people sell a flat piece of metal for $15.00 just to do that job. Another decent sesamee decoder from the office is transparency film (for overhead projectors). Just clip off a corner and off you go.

<SHAMELESS PLUG> I am planning to present again at Dallascon this spring. My next "Analog Hacking in a Digital World" series will feature "Road Warrior Worries" (hacking laptop security devices with, you guessed it, office supplies).</SHAMLESS PLUG>

The plastic to some 3 ring binders makes top notch mica for slipping latches.

This is definately a new pick/hardware category.

So we got,

1. Professional/retail

2. Homebrew/DIY

and now...
3. Imporomptu/McGuyver

I envision ( ) a picking contest (never been to one obviously). Pickers get a bag of assorted office supplies, someone says, 'GO!' and the tool making begins before any picking with the objective of popping a Master padlock or generic cubicle lock.

Grudge,
Tell us all about Dallascon. Anything about you on audio.textfiles.com?

If only Dallascon had a section on lockpicking, I would go.

But, c'est la vie.

Dallascon is a security conference located in (surprise) Dallas Texas. You can find out more at http://www.dallascon.com/ It's original focus was wireless security, but they branched out to all forms a few years ago. I am not affiliated, I was just a presenter last year and plan on doing it again.

Nothing on audio.textfiles.com and Dallascon didn't sell videos of the conference like they had done previously :(. Someone posted my presentation in PDF format at http://dallasaddress.com/Max/whiterabbi ... curity.pdf
However, without the video clips it is pretty much a bunch of blah-blah (this presentation was targeted at IT managers and why they should be concerned about physical security).

The videos show how easy most desk/filing cabinet locks can be raked opened by almost anyone. First with picks and then with a variety of office supplies. I will try to post some of the videos, since it is always fun to see even a simple lock defeated by a pen clip and a brass fastener. The videos also demonstrated some serious bypass techniques for high security locks and some tips on how to prevent this.

After the slideshow, I did a live demonstration and showed off some lock picking tools (pick sets, tubular, electric) and went through a few padlocks/deadbolts.

It would be great if some LP101ers could come out this year. In fact, if anyone wants to team up on an expanded live picking session, we could pitch that to Dallascon.

OK, I posted a couple of office supply picking videos at:

http://benetsafe.com/Brass.zip (5.5 Megs)
http://benetsafe.com/CableTie.zip (8.5 Megs)

Not the greatest videos, but they do demonstrate using a brass fastener rake & paperclip tension wrench and a cable tie rake & pen clip wrench (which are excellent, by the way) on an overhead cabinet.

i wonder why my 2600 mags never had anything good in them, plus i think i only got 3 for a year subscription so i never renewed.

Maybe i'll go look through them now and see if there is anything about locks

It seems that I remember another lock related article fairly recently, but can't remember which issue it was in (generally 2600 is not too lock picking oriented). However, you can scan through their Back Issues sales site for a list of articles:

Thanks Grudge for the videos. I would have never thought of using a zip tie for making a rake and bending the tab off of a pen to make a tension wrench.

Any good vids of lockpicking?

Postby nightstorm » 10 May 2005 14:10

Grudge,

You spoke of vides on this stuff do you have anymore besides these two? I am very interested in how you do this. I prosume you are the presenter at DallasCon that taught the safe cracking class? I was very impressed and wanted to learn more. I just could not take notes fast enough on how you did the lock picks with the pen. If you have any vids that would be great.

Thanks

NightStorm
