This may be old information and common to some but I found this article recently. I liked it from a literary point of view and some of the source information given. It deals with a character who was able to pick locks in the 1851 period and the social changes that demanded locks. At the time he had great fame. There are some lovely anecdotes and inspirational ideas here. It does appear to be the origin of the modern tools we continue to use today. At any rate, it's a long well written history of one period of the trade. What a gas it must have been. I see a movie here.
