Modified Electric Shaver tip?

Postby C247 » 21 May 2005 1:19

First started picking about 5 months ago and learned alot from this site. Made picks from sawblades and paperclips and anything i could get my hands on, but I am trying to move up to electric and snapguns. In Wal-Mart, they sell a small electric shaver, which is only about 5 bucks. I bought one because i was curious as to the low prices. So one day i started using it and noticed the motion. Side to side; that would work great for a mechanical pick. So I took off the head and am down to the small metal rod (plus a little plastic thing and a spring to keep the plastic thing up.)

The small metal rod in the middle moves left and right parallel to the top of the shaver.

Now, the seemingly more difficult part for me... What kind of tip should i put on it, and how should I go about doing so?
I am afraid to solder or weld or melt anything to it right away. Would there be a really good item that could simply clamp onto the tip?
If needed, I could post more photos, but my camera kind of sucks and gets blurry when closer than about half a meter.

You typically want a reasonably thin straight pick head for an electric pick. You coul make it out of a flattened out piece of wire, or grind down a junior hacksaw blade. Make the pick head only 20% longer than the length of a key from tip to shoulder. If you're grinding a hacksaw blade, plan to use the already flat edge as the top (striking) surface of your pick.

As for mounting it you're on your own. :)

You could always just buy a premade tip designed for an electric pick.

My thought on using the shaver is will it be powerful enough to handle the job. I bought a $70 electric shaver at Walmart years back and that thing was a piece of junk.

Hey there C247. I have to admit I admire your sense of adventure. I don't know if the shaver has enough hutzpah to get the job done, but at least you tried. Most people wouldn't even bother to get started on a project like that. Worst comes to worse you could always shave with it.

Well I'm not sure how much power it needs, but it does have alot. I can grab the tip with my fingers and it keeps moving, but I dont know if that'd be enough.

I'm going to go to home depot tomorrow and see if I can find someething that might fit. Or mabye I could just solder a small nail or wire to it?

*sorry for double post, I cant edit my previous one.*

I took off the plastic peice and the small metal part holding down the plastic peice. Now I just have a metal rod. It's too big to fit in a lock, but I could probably solder or glue or tape a little wire to it.

Shaveman electric shaver pick

Postby CVScam » 2 May 2006 18:52

I had a Shaveman electric razor got at Walmart on sale for 1 dollar. It worked good for about 2 weeks till it got dull. I just put a small 1/2 dimond on the end. It has more power than an oral b. Here is a video of me picking a Corbin 5 pin deadbolt. I admit it does take a few more seconds most of the time.

Attaching

Well the shavers were only 1 dollar so lucky I got 5 of them. The first shaver I took it apart to the small rod sticking out I used my rough file to put a few groves in it. I then used my favorite 2 part epoxy goes under a few names around here: Fastweld, J+B Stickweld. It comes in a tube. The first shaver I used too much epoxy and little bit of it fell inside the shaver, it worked about 4 times before it went doa. The picture shows the label and the tube of epoxy right under it. If you make a mistake a hammer or a vice grips will break the epxoy.
