Lock Identification

I want to buy a Mortice lock ID Book or CD and a drilling template for a back up to my kit. I have seen one CD on the justlocks website for £100 and another on the 247 website for £150 does anyone know what the differnce is?. I have also seen a template kit on the 247 site for £60 and another in the SKS catalogue for £178 this seems a big difference.

I saw some pictures on my course. The Francis ones were A5 and neater to carry round, with much better quality pictures. I saw a set of them at Duffells but I didn't note the price.

The 24/7 CD pictures had more information. Each lock had the drill point measurements printed with its picture. However the pictures were very poor quality. I don't know whether they started their life like that; or whether they got distorted on printing.

I hesitate to say it - being a complete novice - but I'd swear there were mistakes. One Francis seemed to have a picture of a Legge value lock body but a 3U114 keyway. Another said Era Profit, but looked like a Wicks. Must've been my poor aging eyes and brain.

At the kinds of prices you mention, I'd probably grit my teeth, add a few more pounds and go on a course that gave me a CD.

It's easy to get the 3U114 and Legge Value mixed up. The Legge's keyway will be 1mm longer then the hardplate and the 3U114's hardplate will be 2mm longer than the keyway.

Also, Wickes' sell ERA locks branded as Wickes'.

The Francis CD is apparently limited. I have the 24-7 one and it's thorough and very good. Haven't received any updates yet as promised but still very good!

The 24-7 drill template is the one to get and gives you drill points for 2-3mm holes, allowing you to poke a wire through whilst lifting the levers, enabling you to open the lock without causing any damage other than a 2-3mm hole in the door and case.

From my experience most of the CDs/templates offered are rehashed pizza ripped from the public domain; either poorly presented and/or over priced. Cant speak for them all of course.

I have my own spreadsheet which has been created from information from trusted sources and from my own observations. I am willing to e-mail a free copy to anyone who PMs on the understanding that I cannot guarantee accuracy and it is used at your own risk.

I only ask that if you find anything needs updating or you can expand the directory you return the favour and swap information.
