BEST cylinders

Postby haribo » 22 Feb 2006 16:01

Called to a housing association job to change a cylinder on the front door as key kept getting stuck. Found of these little beauties on it being part of a master key suite.

Has anyone seen or changed one of these. The idea is a (sfic) small form interchangable core and is designed for ease of mangement on this type of master key system. You need a special key to remove the core and change. They have a spare core so will be going back tomorrow to change once they have found the removal key. Seems to be a a lock from our friends over the pond.

Without the removal key, you are goign to have a hard time of things. There is a drill point to remove the core if it is faulty, or if you cannot pick the control shear line. PM if you need that. But, you cannot insert a new core without either the control key, or picking the control shear line on the new core. The control key is equivalent to the top level master (or even higher if there are cylinders not on the master) So, if it is lost, consider the entire suite to be comprimised.

Now assuming nothing has gone missing, changing the core out is so simple you might be embarassed to collect your fee.

Insert control key, turn clockwise (if the lock is installed with the "pins down", ie Noth American style) about 1/8 of a turn. Pull the key/core out of the housing.

In some locks, there is a tailpiece that fits into the core and will come out with the core, in others, the tailpiece is a permanent feature of the lock, and will not come out with the core. If the tailpiece comes out, just pull it out of the core and insert into the new core.

Turn the control key back to the neutral position and remove from old core.

Insert control key into new core. Turn clockwise. Insert core into lock, turn key counterclockwise and remove.
