Legge model ID

I wonder if someone can help me identify this lock. (sorry no photo)

It’s Legge BS rated has a grey case, silver curtain, with three fixing screws. The keyhole is cut out of the H/P, and there is a dimple towards the back of the case near the keyhole.

I thought it may be a 5641, but aren’t they black ?
Also aren’t they supposed to by 5G, as the one I have is about 5.1mm dia key, is it a funny one or are legge just a strange key size

Sounds like the Legge Value.

Cheers Evo,

Is the 5mm curtain the norm, and does this mean that you would use a 7 G pick on it or “convince” it to accept a 5G

How do you rate this lock in terms of quality, and ease of picking. I’ve mastered the Profit & Invincible and got this as the next step, but it’s a totally different set-up.

I’m using a loose wire CB type pick & any advise would be appreciated

Not sure what you mean about the gauge size, should be 5g if Legge.

The Legge's aren't much more difficult to pick than the ERA's. Nudge each lever a mil or so until all levers are in gates, then go through the pack and determine which are in the false gate (there will be less movement and play when touched than the levers in their true gates), then ease off the tension slightly and nudge the lever(s) in false gates up and these will then enter true gate and open.

its basicly same lock as the 5641, and as evo says is the legge value, legge is a 5g lock and the 5g pick picks it, though if new the chrome on curtain sometimes is a little thick, a quick rub round with a round file sorts the problem.

the legge value is grey and is identical to assec lock in gold, and assec is far cheaper. it picks adream on pick in minutes.

the id of a bs legge/assec is simple, look carefully at keyway, it is the only lock on the market, that the keyway is 1mm longer than the h/p , instant givaway, regardless of colour and badge name.

its worth noting that the legge 3 lever in white is the same lock without the h/p and has a curtain and 3 x BS levers, the 2 lever is same case and levers just 2 of them with a large spacer. legge did this so it would be easy to upgrade from 2 to 5 levers, and you only need 1 key blank for whole legge range.

Cheers all. Lots of useful information above.

You all make it sound soooo easy. The feel is quite a lot different to the ERA’s so I guess its just a matter of practice till I get used to it.

Well I’d better get back to it.
:)

Edit; It turns out it was just a bit tight due to being new, fits a treat now

7G is 4.5mm by the way so you shouldnt be able to squeeze a 5g pick in one.

Shrub,
I wasn’t sure whether I should use a 7G pick and it be a bit loose or force the 5G in.
It turns out it is 5G and it’s just like Pinky said; the chrome was a bit thick. The key was about 5.1mm dia and that was quite a tight fit.

I’ve managed to pick it now   , and it is quite easy to get out of the antipicks on these, which isn’t that surprising when you look at them, they don’t look that intimidating.

On a side are all the Legge range this forgiving and if so what would you advise as a next one

yes they are on the whole all forgiving, but like all locks, you always get that 1 that thinks its a 110.

secret with legge is to not lift anything more than 1mm at a time, until little clicks are felt and heard on binding levers, keep picking the binding lever 1mm till u feel and hear a click until it opens, which it almost always will.

union 2134, yale 560 or chubb 3U114 are good locks to defeat, but only pick 1 as they are all the same lock, just different colour and badge, but all the same lock to pick.

walsall are a trickier pick especialy the old, and then progress to 114 and 110 locks, a much stiffer challenge, but oh the buzz.
