help required BEST IC cylinder

Postby exspook » 17 Apr 2008 16:14

I have recently come across several BEST IC cylinders that the users have misplaced the Core Key

what is the best way to remove these?

to date the 4.5mm rotary pick straight down the shearline and P for plently on the screwdriver has worked but it is a bit nasty

many thanks in advance

A. If already out of the hardware, disassemble, measure pins, cut a control key.

B. If in the hardware, either destroy the hardware and proceed with option A, or try to pick the control shear with the appropriate SFIC tension tool.

Peterson sells a drilling device that gets the core out without damaging the hardware. It drill the control lug so you can pull out the core and decode it.

You can do one this way and then decode a control key from it and take the others out.

best cylinders

best cylinders tend to be master keyed, If you have the individual key and take the lock apart, which tend to destroy it if you can't replace those two pins that hold the key stop on, you will find other shear lines, if you make keys to all the various combinations, you will have the control key, and if you have 30 or so extra keys, they could be control keys for other locks.

before doing any work on the lock, look at Matt Blaze internet site and read his papers on SFIC and also Rights Amplification, in fact print them out because you may want to refer to them while at the workbench.

workaround

If you wish to take the best apart and then put it back together, you could drill two holes in either side of the the keystop, and tap them for some small screws, before taking the rivet heads off, (the rivet heads will hold the two parts together perfectly while you drill and tap) don't use the holes that recieve the pins from the boltworks, they have another purpose.

That was a bunch of crazy answers. Please clarify... Are the IC cores in a mortise or rim cylinder or are you referring to the IC cores as the cylinder? Are they in a lever lock or padlock. If in a cylinder please be specific as we choose different techniques for different examples. Once you get the IC cores out of the lock we can continue this explanation.

Can you pin an IC core with a #9 operating key and a #0 core key bitting in the same space? Heh, heh, heh.

#1 pin is not part of the OEM spec and nobody makes it.
#2 master pin, the smallest available is 0.0125" thick.

Nobody makes 0.00625" thin master pins.
