European key copy

Postby halo » 10 Sep 2008 8:23

Have a (De Ratt) hotel type safe that was given to me. It is from from Europe (Netherlands I believe) and I'm having difficulty finding a place to copy the key in the US. It is a double sided skeleton cut type key. The key also has a code but I'm not getting anywhere with it.

Any help/advise appreciated

Hi!

If this is truly a warded lock, then you can pretty easily copy it or even impression a key for it. Blanks are available from Ilco. Here is a link for the pdf of the "Bit and Barrel" key catalog.

All that out of the way, I think you have a double sided lever lock, not a warded one. The test for this is pretty easy. Take a medium or long hook and insert about 1/2 way into in the keyway. Rotate it 90 degrees. If you come up against a hard obstruction, and moving around you mainly find other hard obstructions, it is a warded lock. If you feel a lot of jiggly springy bits, it is a lever lock.

In the US, we don't see many lever locks, outside of flat-key safe deposit boxes. Most "real"* locksmith's should be able to cut a key for you, but they will probably have to special order the blank. If you don't have an original key, I would say your chances of getting a code-cut key range somewhere between slim and none.

Good Luck,
-ellie
