German cylinders

Postby Peter Martin » 5 Aug 2004 21:53

Has anyone come across the German lock cylinders called "Ibus"? If I recall correctly they were mounted upside down - like all locks in Germany were - with a very narrow keyway, 6 or 7 pins which had serration which acted similar to mushroom pins.
Are these locksets sold in the US?

I have not seen such a lock in the US, but that doesn't mean they cannot be ordered from a supplier, etc.

Abus

Yes, it probably was "Abus" instead of Ibus.

Is anyone familiar with this type of door lockset? I see their padlocks sold here - mainly for storage units, but none of thier other locksets (possibly because of different thicknesses, lack of parts, or Americans just don;t like lever handles).

You might try their website www.abus.com (or abus.de), to find out their resellers or ask them directly where the Abus Euro Cylinders can be obtained from for the US.

We have them around here (in do it yourself shops ...)
They are a pain. I got one with the lowest security rating (they had in the shop)
5 pin , all but the middle pin where serrated (1 line) and all the drivers where spools. As if that wasn't enough it has a terrible keyway.

Haven't been able to pick it with more than 2 pins  (not that i'm any good but i do get my front door open thats a normal 5 pin w a better keyway :P )
I realy should replace my front door lock ;)

some pics from the abus site

If you look at the middle groove on the key, on my key the first pin comes to the center of that groove :(

They are nice, aren't they, quicklocks? I have several of them, and I've seen one of those opened by another SSDeV member, but I couldn't do it myself so far.
I decided not to open it for a while, but just to feel what is going on inside. Takes the strain out of it a bit. Just smirk back and say: I'll get you after all.
