Southord euro lockpicks and lockpicking

Postby Anasazi » 31 Jan 2015 15:58

Hi all,

This being my first post here I figure that I might as well introduce myself, I'm a Swedish electrical engineer who spends most of his time coding.
I've been lockpicking on and off for quite a while now, mostly using cheap chinese lockpicks which I find to be impressivley competative. I like the feel of them and how sturdy they actually are.
Now, I ordered a Southourd 22 piece slimeline edition for euro locks from UKBumpkeys. (Great service and fast delivery by the way.)

I've been using this set for a while now, but I can't really get comfortable with them. They're pretty fragile and I don't feel like I can put any force into them while picking.
This is where I turn to you who've used them, is it me who's going too rough?

Here's pictures of the set as well on the chinese sets and the setup in use.

I've mainly been picking ABUS padlocks, such as the one in the wrench, an ABUS 65/50. I'm able to pick the ABUS 65/50 I have with great ease using the chinese lockpicks, but when it comes to using the Southord picks I'm at loss.

The problem I'm having is that I can't utilize force when picking with them, they bend and becomes misshaped. Which forces me to tread very lightly as I pick them, this in turn makes it very hard.
(Please note that I'm not using excessive force, but rather moderate. At least from my point of view, I could provide a video of me picking with the set for reference.)

The same goes for ASSA tumbler locks, twin-combis and the such. However, smaller locks is not a problem since I can't get any other bigger lockpicks in keyway anyway.

So, what is your thoughts of this particular lockpicking set?
Best regards.

The tension wrenches you have in the top pic, I don't like those at all, I understand about bending picks, I bend my HPC picks
all the time, prolly doesn't help that I use them as probes every once in awhile, instead of getting an icepick from my toolbox
The chinese tension wrenches look OK

Thanks for the tip on UKbumpkeys! I've been looking to get the 15 pcs-set, but from this site I'd get the 22 pcs cheaper.
Looks like I'm getting this!

On topic; I'm not a very experienced picker, but I guess that's what you'd get with a slimline set. You should probably go with the widest pick possible at most times. I have a chinese set of hooks and i can hardly even get them in to any of the looks I have lying around, like normal Abus locks or (here) Cocraft locks.

Swedish here too btw.

How thick are your chinese picks? Is the chinese regular or are they euro? Where did you get the chinese set it looks pretty nice.

Hi....

I own all the Picks in your Pix... Love the Black Case !!!!!
If UR bending the Southord tools, Way too much tension/force is being used...
The Southord tools are 0.200" / 20 Thousands, your Goso/Klom tools are 0.28" to
0.40" thick, and should the lock require that much tension/force, then use the GOSO/Klom tools....
The reason we have different tools for different locks....

I just picked up some Peterson Slenders 0.015" with Green handles in their December 2015 Sale...
Also, THICK Heat Shrink Tubing may help your "Gripsion" whilst using the Southords....
