Mobile key cutting machine

Postby rotorkey » 27 Apr 2005 9:14

Hi

I'm interested in providing a mobile key cutting service (mortice and cylinder) in my local area and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on suitable machines. My budget is quite limited and the only suitable model I've been able to find is from SKS:

SKS Tempest (007-A) approx £300 + VAT

Is anyone familiar with this model?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Regards

Jase

The machine you mentioned is ok for mobile work but not high use. Its designed for light use and to vut mortice keys after cutting a cylinder requires a change over of blades. You will need a dual machine or 2 individual machines if your cutting a lot of keys.
Keymachines.com does some dual machines as do sks and most of the other major suppliers.

I hope this will help a little. I looked at the same machine as you from SKS and with a little advise decided it was a bit lightweight. I eventually opted for an RST dual machine supplied from City Safe. Having the ability to cut cylinder or mortice without changing blades and/or carriers is good to have but the machine itself seems very durable and the carriers have various options for holding the keys. I have used it now and am very pleased. To fit it into my van I made an mdf box secured to the floor which doubles as a bench on which to site the machine and a container in which to protect it. For supply I purchased a 600w inverter from maplins which is more than sufficient and also a 720w generator from Screwfix which although 2 stroke is quiet and clean. It is also very small and only £99. All this in total came to about £1000, but has outperformed my expectations and I am very pleased with all.
