Theres problably no chance of me attending unless its like way down south...but then thats unlikely as having in the middle of the uk makes most sense. Have Fun! Don't forget to video camera the whole thing, and if you need someone to crop/compress/SFX footage for computer use, i'm your man/boy!

hello everyone, i am new here. I just wanted to say that in my opinion there is more knowledge and experience here than any other forum i have seen. I look forward to being an active member.
I love the idea of a UK competition. I was thinking that if you contacted varios security companies, lock manufacturers, and lockpick companies they would be interested too. They may even be interested in sponsoring it, or helping with the prizes. I think it would be very interesting if some of the above attended, as im sure many lock manufacturers would see it as a great chance to test the security of their products and maybe as a good PR chance.
I think it would also be a good idea to have it located fairly centrally in the UK, i dont relish the idea of driving all the way across the country

Fisty,
About the Absinthe
"After the first glass, you see the locks as you wish they were.
After the second, you see the locks as they are not.
Finally, you see the locks as they really are,
which is the most horrible thing in the world."

I'd be interested in going, though to make it worth my while in terms of time, money, and having to travel, I'd want a few requirements met first:
1: Alongside the main competition some talks should be given. Somebody already mentioned talking to various companies about things like sponsorship, but how about also asking them to send somebody along to represent them and maybe give a talk about the things they have to do to keep people like us from messing with their hardware? How about asking some locksmith's to come and give talks about getting into the locksmithing business etc? It seems to me that these type of questions are of a lot of interest here on the LP101 forums and many of us would relish being able to talk to experts in our field of interest in real life as well as online.
2: A good adult presence. I'm only 19 myself, but I'm quite grown up and mature. I wouldn't want to go if I was going to be sitting in a room with a bunch of 14 year olds. I dont mind them, but I'd feel more comfortable going to an event where there would be a decent amount of adults to equal their number.
3: Develop the lpuk website a little more so that there are forums for UK pickers to get to know eachother. I know many of us use LP101, but I think we'd be happier having an extra place just to talk about the upcomming event among ourselves etc. I'd be happier if I could get to know the other people who would be attending in advance of the actual event, and I expect most other potential attendee's would too.
4: Give us a proper definition of what the event will be composed of as soon as possible. I know you are just in the ideas stage at the moment, but I would like a full run down of the planned timetable of the event, costs associated with attending (You said on your website that it would last several days, so can you do research and find out the best places for us to stay in the area of the event etc?), and anything else you might think relevant.
As far as school holiday's go, I think summer is from the last friday in July to about the 9th of september; thats what it was for me a few years ago. That should give you five/six weeks during which you can hold the event if you decide that it has to be summer holidays. Keep in mind that the government has started routinely fux0r1ng with the education system in the last few years so you should probably research this rather than take my word for it.
Finally, let me just say "thanks" for doing this. Even if it doesn't work out, its great that somebody is trying to get some kind of group together for UK pickers to socialise a little bit. I'm very new to the hobby myself and I'd much enjoy the opportunity to meet some experts and pick their brains to learn some new things. ("pick their brains" - get it?!). heh.
Thats my two pence anyway. Good luck :)

Wow, ive been away for a bit getting broadband now I'm back and i have got a lot of responses to this thread.
Right then, with the LpUK website, it is under development still, were using phpbb aswell so the layout should be easy for every one.
With the competition, it is going ahead but it will be delayed untill i get as many of these ideas from people working. With all these ideas running around I dont want to rush the competition and miss things out. I hope this doesn't bother people, as in the end the wait will be worth it as there will be more to the competition. It will be held this year though so keep the ideas comming.
I'll speak to people about talking at the comp and ill keep posting on whats happening

Hi, I'm a member of SSDeV, the German lockpicking club, and I guess if you published about the Competition in the page that is linked from http://www.lockpicking.org several people would like to come.
I don't know yet, it would depend a lot on cost for accomodation, I guess, as I can get fairly cheap flights from Niederrhein Airport to London, and train fares can't be much more than in Germany.
In German competitions each contendant takes his own lock along and has to open it in front of a jury in a shorter time than the others have to open it. The rules for the competition are available from the website mentioned above.
Perhaps a member of TOOL http://www.lockpicken.nl can say more about their rules than I can. I took part in the last Dutch Open, and we had new locks of 2 makes with 5 pins for the first rounds and in the finals locks with 6 pins were added. We sat in pairs and one drew a lock of one make out of a bucket, the other drew from the other make and then we had some time to open the lock and after the time the locks were swapped. After those two rounds against one partner, points were assigned 1 point for the one who opened more locks or opened them quicker, no point for the other. And then pairs were drawn from those who had the same number of points.
Prices: The SSDeV often has some better picksets, plug spinners, etc. as prices and in the Dutch Open last year there was a box of cutaway EVVA locks, which drew much attention.
HTH,

I'm not too good at picking so i won't compete, but I am a freelance photographer and have friends who are freelance journo's.. I can try to get an artical in a paper if you like after the event.
As to where to hold it, the obvious place is in Willenhall in the west midlands: this is the traditional home of the lock industry. You could try contacting the lock museam for a start. If this doesn't work msn me ( msn@eddieparkes.co.uk) and i may be able to russle up somewhere (no promises), but i have some contacts within the lock industry.
