Whats the best way to measure the height of the keyway of a mortice lock ? Ive been pusseling on this for some time but cant find a suitable tool. I thought maybe callipers and a micro meter...
Dial caliper is your best do-it-all tool ... if you don't like analog, you could get a digitl sort too. They typicall will do inside measurements, outside measurements and depth measurements right out of the box! They range in price anywhere from $20 on up to $400 for the top-of-the line certified accurate data logging sort... ~Grit.

Howerver i dont think i made myself clear (sorry ) i need to take the measurment of a mortice lock keyway, with the lock inside thr door. Would the dial micrometer still work?
Yes, me too. If it's simply to ID whether a lock is a 110 or 114 then just try a 114 blank and if it goes in it's a 114. Or a bit of mica to feel how high the bolt sits in relation to the keyway.
Other than that I'm a bit lost why you want to measure keyways inside a door.
Use a tapered piece of plastic which you make marks on and slide into the key hole. I know this works as one of the members on here uses this method with great success ( sid).
The tapered gauge is quite a good idea but depends on the doors being the same thickness or you being able to see the gauge on the side of the lock,
Have a keyring of various 'go no go' gauges homemade, these only need to be a few stips of brass on a ring and if the strip goes in the keyway then move to the next one, keep going until one doesnt fit, the one hat does is your measurement, you only need a few as there isnt a lot of differance in all the locks.

As i said earlier im puting my own mortice ID kit together, ive been recording, colour, finish, obvious detail(rivits, visable hardplate, etc,), height and depth of keyway, size and colour of curtain, and the distance from the keyway to the bolt. Is their anthing i am missing?
There's also what you see and feel as you turn the curtain. A Securefast goes all the way round. An old Union 2134 has a triangular nick. The Chubb 3G114E has more daylight at the 90 degree position.
