Thumbturn cylinders

Postby bowleya » 1 May 2006 18:42

Hi All

Has anybody any advice on picking these cylinders???. I have picked one so the cylinder turns but i was still unable to turn the thumbturn to open the lock. I did see one of these new picks at the show that go past the pins and seem to turn the plate( I think, but could not see the demo in full as the guy demonstrating could not get it to work). any tips on how to open these cylinders or where i can purchase these wire like pick i would be most grateful.

The wire pck is a bypass and not for the public forums but john richards sell them as well as keyprint, they work well but only on thumbturns and usually only a select few of the cheaper locks.

To pick euro and oval locks you quite often have to press the metal plug in at the back of the plug after picking so the cam is engaged and able to turn.

Striping one of these locks down wil help you fully understand what your doing wrong and also help you realise what the bypass is.

keyprint and nigel rose also sell the tool you seek, but easily made on 1mm piano wire, i believe some pics exist in advance forum.

they pick expensive as well as cheap locks, but some makes like gege , evva and union wont work, they are very succesfull on all Iseo cylinders including the R6 and R11 dimple locks, Azbe dimple locks, ES, walsall , wks , mila , era , zone , and merchant locks and alot more.
this bypass wont get them all , but will get 75% of what you come across.

homemade tool is better ive found, as different makes of lock like a different shaped end to engage the cam, and alteration is needed at the door for differing makes to get the most from this tool, 4 types of bend on the tip will cover most of what you come across, both cheap and expensive locks fall to this method, but obviously top end locks such as gege, union , evva mul t lock and chubb will not fall to this method.

Have to say, I never use the thumbturn turners either. When I bought them and practised they kept getting stuck in the back of the cylinder, which is the last thing I'd want on the door on a warrant, so it put me off 'em.

I use other ways like picking and engaging the cam (I use an old hook pick), which has only been a problem once or twice (recently on an Evva), and if that fails then the great 6mm green and yellow pick comes out...

6mm is all it is, and it comes in many colours, but the green and yellow is pleasing on the eye, and effective.

I must confess to a plain boring old white one myself, although I'm keeping an eye out for more adventurous colours...

And a fine job it does too. Used it last week in fact on an Evva that I was having trouble picking up the cam on. Worked a treat, although I'm sure the deluxe yellow & green model would work even better...

I know what it is now lol i wont spoil it here but maybe a yellow and green sprayed with glow in the dark paint although i guess the turn would then be covered in it as it got rubbed off lol
