Additional upvc door lock security

Postby horsefeathers » 2 Jun 2006 7:05

Hi all

Two hypothetical questions for consideration....

first - Old lady wants to feel more secure behind her nice new upvc door. Remembers her old wooden door had a chain and wonders about fitting same. Or maybe some sort of shoot bolt. So if a customer wanted extra security fitted on to her upvc door (to be used when inside house - at night say), what would you fit?

second - Old lady remembers a yale lock she had on her wooden door - liked the idea of pulling it behind her and locks behind her. She sometimes enters house and closes door on its latch but forgets to lock it. Is there anything that can be fitted to automatically engage a lock/bolt when door shuts (maybe similar to a window snap lock)?

any thoughts welcome - purely all hypothetical but imagine a real situation perhaps. And the customer is pensioner so doesnt want to spend loads.

regards

wayne

The automatic doorstrips I have seen. Would there not be a danger of the old lady popping out to garden (lets assume upvc door is back door) and door closing and locking - and she forgot to take key with her? Plus refitting one of those to her door is gonna eat up her pathetic State Pension.

Chubb chain - ummm.....where's my chubb catalogue! Let's have a look.

Try the ERA 812-15
this can be used as UPVC door chain as well as window restrictor.

hi horsefeathers you could also use the ERA Sah Jammer which you fit to the frame ,2 versions area available lock and none locking , these are only used as secondry security on doors as you need to be inside to lock them .

Thanks guys - I am familiar with sash jammers and, although never fitted one, the era 812-15 and similar.

Just wondered what the preference is - for trading lockies who have actually been asked to do this. Or would you recommend against fitting these additional locks?[/b]

Sash jammers are very user friendly in the non locking guise, i fit a lot of these. They are great if you have small kids as it stops them reaching up to the handle and opening the door also in a fire its easier to move 2 of these back than to try and insert a key and unlock the multipoint, i have 2 fitted to my front door which i use all the time.If you do go down the locking route its simple to not use the locking part until you need it if you get the era versions, this way you have the option to lock it or not like i do when i go on holiday.
