Is this the first curtain pick you have used?

Some of the others (Safe Ventures for a start) a easier to begin with, but as has been mentioned before, will not pick as many locks.

Sometimes with the CB pick you will need to angle the pick (not the "lolipop" turner) to get under low levers. This is best demonstrated be someone, as to try and describe it would be difficult.

You could also try a perspex cover on the lock so you can see what you are doing, there are some on ebay:

Not certain who is selling them, but I have my suspicions :D (its not me!)

It's all about the tension . . .

This is somehing that took me a while to get round when i first started to pick with a CB 5.5G. With some practice and fiddling you will find a way to do it. I tend to if the bolt is on my left when looking at the lock angle the Thumb turn & wire upwards and towards the bolt at about the 10 - 11 o'clock position and ever so slightly rock the the thumb turn whilst pulling it back towards me.
Then if working to the back of the lock i use same technique but use the tip of wire to nudge low levers up to get under them. Like someone already said the clear covers you can buy are a good learnig tool. Some of the more experienced pickers on here may be able to give advice or point you in direction of a thread they know of

Clear covers are ok if you dont quite understand how a BS lever lock is picked but once thats learnt they can be a hinderance the same as clear practise cylinders are,
You will save a lot of money if you simply take the cover off and drill a hole so you can see the stump and gates (10 mm for a beginer will do), peel the hardplate off fist while its of the lock to make drilling with a normal bit easier,

When you feel like your getting it simply put some tape over the hole and then try picking it,

To get under the low levers, lift your 'lolli pop' up and off the stem and to the direction of the bolt so you can angle the tip of the pickunder the lever and either nudge it up or put the 'lolli pop' back on the stem to then lift the lever, With practise you can do this with a lot less movement of the 'lolli pop' and get under the levers a lot better,

Stick with the lock and learn to feel what is a false set and what isnt,
If you look at your levers you will note that all the high cuts have the false notch above the real gate and all the low cuts have them below the real gate, i wont tell you which way is which here ill let you work it out or search around to find the other threads on it,

You simply go along the lever pack with little tension on and simply picture in your head or write it down which is the high cuts and which are the low cuts, lift the lever up to determine this,

Once you have your picture of high and low you should now know which levers have a fasle set below the real gate and which have it above the real gate,

Now youve decoded the lock in your head you move along the lever pack for the binding levers and lift that lever to either the real gate or what you know to be a false gate and thus lift it more to the real gate,

Hope this has been of help,
Shrub
