ye olde sliding patio doors

European hardware -lever locks, profile cylinders specific for European locks. European lock picks and European locks.

ye olde sliding patio doors

Postby horsefeathers » 12 Dec 2006 13:42

Anyone know good suppliers of what I call the olde worlde sliding patio door locks? I can never seem to find them in catalogues.......(and pls no-one say duffells as I lost mine months ago..... :( )

Round here we get alot of aluminium or wooden sliding patio doors. These have a rigid handle either side of the door, but tucked behind the handles are usually black plastic levers which move up and down. Movement of these levers moves two or more 'pins' (which seem more like mushroom headed bolts screwed partway into lock). When in the locked position these bolts are located in their keeps, a bit like mushroom rollers do on upvc door mechs. Moving the black plastic lever simply slides these bolts out of the keeps. The locks have euro/oval cylinders which usually simply deadlock the plastic handles from moving. I have never removed one but does the door usually have to come off the track to allow the lock to slide out of the bottom (or top)?

Any advice appreciated and also correct name for this type of lock.

These can be a nightmare. My record so far was 4 trips!

Mind you, I didn't have a lot to go on, since the previous ones were smashed to bits and thrown away.

I think I got them from DG in the end. Measure everything and take photos, is the best I can say.

Thanks guys - DGS dont seem to have many pics of these on the website, and not always obvious as to make by looking at faceplate (if visible) on lock itself. I guess that photos where possible would help them identify. Not that I am lazy, but I always prefer to dig a catalogue out of the van there and then and match it up, rather that have to plan a return visit after consulting pc at home. Anyway, hopefully there will be a few in the new duffells catalogue due at at end of month.

Do most of these locks need to come out of the door from the bottom (or top), especially as sometimes the 'bolts' are sometimes a good distance apart?

King solutions? I shall investigate.....(didnt he do 'Love and Pride' in the eighties?)

To remove them you can drop them down past the main hole then lift them out or go up then drop it out downwards.Whatever you do dont let it fall down inside the door !!

Paul at Kings is a really good guy ,not let me down once. You can take pics on your phone and send to his and he will give you an answer fairly quickly. For these patio doors my first port of call is normally Duffells speak to Jeff (if hes still about ,not spoken to him for a while) DG do stock this kind of thing but they tend be fairly pricey. May even be worth having a word with Don Braidwood who has accumulated some wierd and wonderful stuff over the years.

Anyone know what's up with the DG website? It's redirecting to some random media company called 10:10 Productions.... odd thing is that it was working fine earlier today. Hopefully it's just offline for a few hours.

I have been to a few jobs with those sliding doors. Normally the problem is the small pin that presses in to the frame when the door has been closed, and allows the lever on the handle to be lifted up or down. They tend to get bent or snapped.

The lock you describe used to be commonly used on the Wickes patio doors.
Don't know if they still do, but if not they may tell you where they were supplied from. Horrible locks though.
Hope that helps.
