New to picking

Postby electoralfraud » 29 Aug 2007 18:25

Hi, I've tried to read most of the stickies, but these questions have probably been asked before, still I'm hoping someone will give me a reply that doesn't include combinations of the words 'search, search, ffs, try again, rtfm, etc..'.

I've been lockpicking for a day now, and only looking to do it as a hobby. I've got a basic 9 pick set. I bought a B&Q own brand padlock which was pretty easy, a Master #150 padlock which I've already started to get down reasonably pat and an ERA 6 pin security euro profile which I haven't managed to pick yet.

Firstly I think my main problem with the ERA is the shape of the keyway. What sort of advice would you give on these keyways? I realise that the major suggestion will probably be practice, but is there any 'gimmick' so to speak to manage picks around the curvature?

Secondly, what lock would you suggest trying to get hold of next?

OK, I realise Its been a day and I'm probably flush with early success and I need to sleep on it. But I'd appreciate any sensible advice you could give me on these two questions.

practice

Well you are correct about part of it about the practice.
Like the old saying, "Rome wasn't built in a day!"
But try your luck with each pick carefully and see what one fits you best.
I'm not sure what type of basic picks you have, but few sites has some nice Euro picks that can be of assistance if you don't have them.

Picking a lock is almost like trying to get that perfect date with the gorgeous chick you have met.

Alot of time and effort devoted to obtain what your after!

I'll probably try and ask for some single side euros from a locksmith sometime this week then. I'm from London, lived there all my life.

Oh yeah. I forgot to add I managed the ERA eventually. I really just had to sleep on it and approach it fresh and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Any reason there isn't an edit button on here?
