Key machine

Postby lido » 19 Aug 2008 14:31

Hi!
I saw a video with a key machine which copies most keys. The blanks for the machine had a "smiley"
What's the name of the machine?
What's a good key machine to start of with?

That machine doesn't copy most keys, it mills the actual blanks to most keys. It's called a EasyEntrie Machine. and the blanks with smileys are called the Rohlex.

What a good key machine to start what with? Hobby picking? a Locksmith business? the Easy Entrie is about $10,000, you got that laying around? I need one of those too, so send one to us at TOOOL US Boston, MA. kthx.

A brief write up with some photos of the EasyEntrie Pink Box below:

A good key copy machine to start with

Postby lido » 20 Aug 2008 8:35

A good machine to start with for a small shop which sells other products but want offer a new service of key copying.
Most keys are ASSA keys here.

as far as i know, those keys are probably still patent protected and therefore illegal to copy.

also, the easy entrie only does keyways. i don't think it will do the side milling on the key.

ASSA keys

Postby lido » 20 Aug 2008 12:53

There are many kinds of ASSA keys.
The most usual ones are not protected. It's a 5- or 7-pin cylinder.
Then there are some protected keys like ASSA Twin, ASSA Twin Combi.

if they aren't protected, you should theoretically be able to buy blanks without paying 10 grand for a machine to mill them

Just to clarify, it is illegal to sell duplicates to others, but you can make all you want to yourself or as a giveaway.

It's a civil infringement. Basically, they can (very easily) sue you for selling copies of the blanks (or the cut keys on the fake blanks) and the case would be open and shut, really, as all they would need to do is send in a restricted key by post and have you send it back to their lawyers. They'd only have to do this twice to have one spare as a nice sealed "evidence bag" for in court, too.

NKT, very true :) The key here (no pun intended) is selling: If you do it for free, you are not violating anything, at least not in this country.

That is a very good machine. The only problem to do keyblank is the thickness of the original key.
Concerning the copy of patented profil you are not allowed to copy them also it's possible.

Illegal to copy

Postby lido » 26 Aug 2008 7:44

How do you know if a certain key is illegal to copy or not?
Do you have to check if the key blank is publicly available?

You can tell usually by seeing if the key is for a high security lock and if it has "Do Not Duplicate" stamped on the bow of the key. But if you're good at identifying keyways just by visual inspection cos you're either a locksmith or hardcore Lock Sport Enthusiast you can see if the key in question is a restricted keyway prohibiting duplication. Both situation would warrant you to CYA.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture
