Question regarding Potent Locks ???

Postby bbznyc » 10 Dec 2008 12:43

Hi Everyone,

My first post since I am a total Newbbie with Locks. Naturally I post because I need help from experts. I need a surface mount lock for an apartment in a building in NYC. Security is key and I am aware of the bumping and picking techniques which are out there.

Search this site for Potent and found nothing :(

So... without further delay....

I was recommended this lock: http://potentlock.com/

Companies official lock is on this website: http://potent.it/products.php?top=products&cat=SER3

There is a guy who was highly recommeneded who does installations. (runs potentlock.com)

What do you guys think? My concerns are antibumping and want to make sure it's not easily picked.

Thanks a million! :D

The locks on that page are pump locks and 4 turn double bitted lever locks, they can't be bumped and won't be picked easily. The locks on their cylinders and padlocks pages doesn't look like anything new or special. They sell very high security door hardware.

Their padlocks page has been defaced though!

yeah... I saw that.. the irony of things... Company that makes security products has their security compromised...

:)

The guy wants $260 for it installed. Do think that's a good price for it?

I'll let someone that knows more than me, answer your other questions. Just to clarify, are you looking at the single locking point?

There is the regular lock which is on the door knob and I want this to be secondary.

This lock has an option to be expanded by locking on top and bottom.

Potent make good "double-bitted key" lever locks. The good points: reasonable cost, security and resistance to manipulation (as long as you do double lock them). They are better than a lot of US locks and can be installed with top and bottom bolts. The weak points: they are not that hard to manipulate, impression and can also be forced relatively easily. Since it is a lever lock, bumping is not an issue. If you team it with another secure lock (eg Chubb), you could have a winning combination.

Hey Mate,

Thanks for the heads up. The lock does have weak screws. They look so small in comparison to the size of the lock itself - forcing it could be an issue... Can you be specific on which Chubb lock I should go for? Models?

Thanks a bunch.
