old CALIV padlock

I was lucky and found this CALIV padlock. It's from a house built in 1930 so it could be very old.
I've never heard that name, maybe the manufacturer is long gone.
The lock is still working but I haven't found the key. I'll search better next time I go there.
It's a 4 pins lock. The body has a triangular section. Basically the plug has a cut side, it's "D" shaped. If you turn it 180 degrees, like in the second picture, it let you open the shackle. When you close it and turn the key, the round groove in the shackle is held down by the round half of the plug. A very simple and effective design, in fact the lock works like a charm!

I picked it with great respect since I didn't want to ruin it. Opening this lock after so many Years was a nice experience. It made me think about how could have been everyday life in that period...

Cheers :)

Great find Femurat! Beautiful old lock.

I tried looking up some further information on CALIV and came up empty handed.
I hope you can find the key for it, that would be really cool.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Slick Pick, before posting I looked the name too and found nothing.

Hi Rick, the shackle is unusual but it's not the only strange one, I think this modern abloy is not so different from this old one. But I don't know the reason why this is so wide... maybe it was supposed to fit a particular application.

Cheers :)

I don't get it? Does the shackle not foul the pin tumbler when its locked?
What a load of old BiLocks!!!!

I'm probably 0 for 400 in looking for safes behind wall paintings

...
The BiLock isn't the first bump proof pin tumbler because it isn't a pin tumbler.
And it's called a shear line, not a "sheerline".

Hi Snowy,

if by "foul" you mean that it makes turning the plug hard because of friction, no. In theory it should but the shackle spring is really weak and the shackle groove is smooth and chromed so this doesn't happen.

On a side note its mechanism looks similar to a Vachette ULYSSE padlock, maybe you're familiar with that one?

Cheers :)

I was wondering what the outcome of that was. Thanks for sharing!
