Failed Mechanism on UPVC internal conservatory door.

Postby thebigman » 17 Aug 2011 17:00

Hi everyone

I'm new to the forum, so apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place.

I have an issue getting an internal conservatory door open. I need to replace the gearbox because is has failed - but I need to get the thing open first! I have snapped out the cylinder, unlocked with the crucifix tool and the handles are not operating the mechanisms.

The cylinder/handles are on the right-hand pane in the middle.

I cannot (as far as I am aware) use my Emergency uPVC Opening Kit, because there is no frame/ wall to set the pusher against. Other then using a pry-bar, is there any way of "spreading" the doors so I can manipulate the mechanisms open?

Hope someone can help.....this has got me stumped!

it does this because the lead inside wares and you need just a little bit more to open it.that is if the the handles going down at all,if it isent i cannot help you as i have never come across this.

Try to spread the doors gently with a wide chisel or prybar, so that you can see the individual locking points. These can be tapped into the open position, and with a bit of luck moving one shifts all the rest, as they are linked.

You can also sometimes pull the hinge pins and lift the doors off to get at the mechanism.

Do you know what make the MPL is?

The OP said the cylinder had been snapped out so he won't be able to turn the key while operating the handle. Assuming it's not a sliding door then prying (the OP obviously knows about this) and moving the locking points might work - but the most likely problem is something broken inside the gearbox, and that something might be jamming the MPL slider mechanism. Fixing it is likely to involve drilling the gearbox, but either way it's a bypass and/or destructive entry solution.

Cheers...

you can still work the lock without the euro lock there.i know you could use a spade to get it open by pushing the door away from the frame.i surjest taking the glass out first.

If this fails you will need to spread the door with wedges and airbag enough to retract the hooks, the rollers and latch will just pop open on their own.
